  1. Don’t Mix Copper with Fiber

When installing cables to interconnect various devices, you can use either copper, fiber or both. If you have to use both types of cables within the racks, you should ensure that they don’t run in the same trunk. Fiber in particular is light because it’s made from light glass material. It can’t therefore tolerate any weight whatsoever. Copper on the other hand is heavy because it’s made from metal. If you put copper and fiber in the same trunk, the fiber cables will eventually be damaged by the weight of copper.

  1. Label All the Cables

It’s obvious that there are multiple cables that run across different racks within a data center. The problem is that they often get mixed up during the installation process. Knowing which cable goes where can be a puzzle because there are so many of them that need to be fixed on relevant ports. But there is a solution.  Before you connect any cable to a port in the rack, you should first label both of its ends. The label should indicate the destination to avoid inserting it in the wrong port. Remember, wrong connections are as bad as not having any connection at all. Besides that, it’s important to test cables during the installation period because it’s much easier than testing after all the cables have been put in place. This means that you should confirm that an individual connection has been achieved before installing the next bunch of cables.

3, Tie the Cables into Bundles




It’s easy to manage cables that have been bundled together. When installing a cable infrastructure, it’s recommended that you pick cables that are of the same color and destination and bundle them using ties. Velcro based ties are the best because they are gentle on the cables as opposed to zip ties that weigh so much on the cables.

  1. Use Large Cable Trunks

The capacity of a data center grows as an organization expands. When laying out cables, it’s important to use large trunks. Such trunks make it easier to add more cables in future. If your current trunk is almost full to capacity, you should consider bringing in a roomy trunk that can accommodate more cables and still leave at least 90 percent of its vacuum unoccupied.

  1. Avoid Blocking Other Equipment

As cables get looped from one port to another terminal, the infrastructure may overlap other crucial equipment, making them inaccessible. Such a problem can be remedied by using vertical, horizontal and overhead cable managers. The cable managers help in routing the cables away from other equipment that need to be accessed regularly.
