IOT Based Toll Booth Manager System using pic microcontroller

IOT (internet of things) based toll booth manager system is such type of a system that provides the automatic toll collection process with the help of internet resources and RFID (radio frequency identification) technology. If we talk about accountability, then manually toll collection process is very complicated because it is not so much easy to manage hundred and thousands of vehicles at same time. It required more man power as well as with more toll collection booth, which could be so much costly and difficult for toll collection department. On other hand, so much time is wasted by the vehicle owners when they are stand in so much long toll collection row.

To manage all these above situations and to facilitate the vehicles owners, so many toll booth manager systems are available in market but that one’s are so much costly as well as they are not so much efficient, reliable, precise and friendly to use. Here we have proposed a system that is called IOT based toll booth manager system which is so much efficient, reliable and friendly to use. In this system every vehicle owner posses a RFID based card, which would be scanned this card during pass through toll collection both. This IOT based toll booth manager system have designed with the help of, RFID reader, buzzer, WIFI modem, step down ac transformer, bridge rectifier, voltage regulator, LCD display, microcontroller PIC18F452 belongs to pic family and dc motor with motor drive. The block diagram of this IOT based toll booth manager system with all their essential components is shown in figure 1

Working Principle of IOT Based Toll Booth Manager System

This IOT based toll manager system works on the principle RFID reader. When any one vehicle passes through toll collection booth then vehicle owner just scanned his RFID card on RFID reader then this RFID reader will allow the vehicle to pass through toll collection booth. Actually, the behind of this whole process, every vehicle owner must have his own toll booth account and this account would be charged from toll collection booth department. Similarly, when vehicle would be passed though toll collection booth then owner would be scanned his RFID card on RFID reader then RFID reader will give the logic signal to microcontroller. Then microcontroller would give the logic signal to WIFI modem which is interfaced with online internet connection. Through this online internet connection this system will check the balance of that specific vehicle owner. If the balance is enough as per toll booth fee, then microcontroller will give the logic signal to motor drive circuit then this motor drive circuit will drive the motor and then this motor will clear the path to pass the vehicle.

Similarly, if the vehicle owner balance is not enough as per toll both fee then microcontroller will not give the logic signal to motor drive circuit and this motor drive circuit will not drive motor to clear path to pass the vehicle. During this condition, microcontroller will the logic signal to electronic buzzer then this electronic buzzer will switch on and will give the intimation message to toll both department.  This whole process is being done in micro seconds through intelligent microcontroller and microcontroller is also displaying this whole work on LCD display. This intelligent microcontroller is programmed in c language with the help of mikro/c software. It powered up with 5V dc and is interfaced with WIFI module esp8266, RFID reader, LCD display, buzzer and motor drive circuit. This system is directly coupled with 230V ac supply therefore no need of any extra power supply to power on this system.

Applications and Advantages of IOT Based Toll Booth Manager System

  1. This IOT based toll manager system could be installed at all type of toll collection both to collect toll fee automatically through their RFID based card.
  2. This system could be also installed at metro bus station for automatic ticket system.
  3. This system is less costly more reliable and efficient as compared to other systems.
