Monthly Electricity Billing Display System with Bill SMS Features

Monthly Electricity Billing Display System with Bill SMS Features using pic microcontroller: Monthly electricity billing display system with bill SMS features is a system, that would be given the monthly electricity bill intimation to the customer automatically through mobile SMS and this bill intimation would be before the supply company or wapda monthly bill. Nowadays, the wapda or other supply companies are paying over charge because mostly customers do not have the time to check the meter reading or do not have the information how to the calculate the monthly electricity bill therefore the supply companies are taking the benefits of their negligence. On keeping these issues, we have designed a system that is called a monthly electricity billing display system with bill SMS features with the help of PIC microcontroller 18F452, max232, energy meter, opto coupler, LCD display and GSM modem. This system could be installed with customer energy meter and displays the energy meter reading with their consumable units and cost. By using this system, the customers can easily know their energy meter reading, monthly bill at their mobile phones through SMS and can save their time and over charging of supply companies or wapda.

Components List with Detail of Monthly Electricity Billing Display System with Bill SMS Features

Transformer: In this monthly electricity billing display system, transformer is used for supplying the power of this system through wapda power supply. It steps down the 220 V ac into 12 V ac by using mutual induction principle.

Bridge Rectifier: In this monthly electricity billing display system, bridge rectifier is used for converting the ac voltages into dc voltages and it consists of four diodes.

Voltage Regulator: In this monthly electricity billing display system, voltage regulator is used for regulating the 12 V dc into 5 V dc for supplying the power to the other components of this system. LM 7805 voltage regulator IC have been used in this system.

LCD Display: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the LCD display is used for displaying the customer’s monthly consumable units with their cost in other words it displays totally monthly bill. It is 16 pins LCD display, interfaced with microcontroller and is powered up with 5 V dc.

Max 232: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the max 232 is used for serial communication between the microcontroller and GSM modem. It is dual channel 16 pins integrated circuit IC and is only used for communication purposes. It is powered up with 5 V dc and can send or receive the digital signal.

GSM Modem: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the GSM modem is only used for communication purpose between the mobile phone and this billing display system. It is wireless base moden, works on the principle of mobile phone subscriptions and accepts sim card. Here it is interfaced with microcontroller through max 232.

Microcontroller: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the PIC 18F452 microcontroller have been used for the intelligent control of this system. It is 40 pins integrated circuit IC, programmed in c language with the help of mokro/c software. It is powered up with 5 V dc and it interfaced with max 232, LCD display and optocoupler.

Optocoupler: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the optocoupler is used for giving the on or off pulse to microcontroller. It is 6 pins integrated circuit IC and gives the pulse signal to the energy meter after receiving the on or off signal from microcontroller. Here it is also used for isolation purposes between microcontroller and output load.

Energy Meter: In this monthly electricity billing display system, the energy meter is used for calculating the consumable units. Two types of energy meter are available in market one is disc type, which works on the principle of mutual induction second one is digital electronic meter, which have been using here.

Working Principle of Monthly Electricity Billing Display System with Bill SMS Features

This monthly electricity billing display system with bill SMS features, works on the principle pulses which is generated by the energy meter. The energy meter generated the 3200 pulses per kilowatt hours and on bases of these pulses the optocoupler gives the on or off signal to microcontroller, in other words microcontroller count these pulses. Here for the demonstration purposes we would be check this system by connecting the bulb as an output load. But before switching on the output load, first we would be check the GSM modem, is it working or not. For this purpose, we would be sent the SMS from our mobile phone then after some time this SMS would be received at system LCD display then it would be considering in working condition. After that, when we would be switch on the output load then energy meter generates the pulses which is received by the microcontroller through optocoupler, then microcontroller counts these pulses and make the monthly electricity bill. After making the monthly electricity bill, the microcontroller sends the electricity bill intimation signal to customer mobile phone in form of SMS through GSM modem. The microcontroller also display this bill and units at system LCD display.

for simulation purpose I have used pulses in proteus. Because energy meter is not available in proteus. Energy meter gives output in the form of pulses and it gives 3200 pulses per kilo watt hours. So we can use pulse generator in proteus for simulation purpose. Check this video for working of this project.

Applications and Advantages of Monthly Electricity Billing Display System with Bill SMS Features

  1. This monthly electricity billing display system could be used with domestic and industrial energy meters for receiving the monthly bill intimation at customer mobile phone.
  2. By using this system, the customers can easily check their monthly electricity bill and then compare their bills with supply company bills or wapda and save from over charging.
  3. This system is more compact, reliable and less costly as compared to other systems.
  4. This system calculates the monthly electricity bill more precisely as compared to the other systems.
  5. This system is more efficient and easy to install as compared to the other systems.
