🧪 Best Matter and Thread Development Boards
14 boards for building your own Matter-over-Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Thread devices with Espressif ESP-Matter, Silicon Labs and Arduino, or Nordic nRF Connect SDK: from tiny XIAO modules to official vendor DKs.
✅ 14 Boards Reviewed
✅ ESP32, Silicon Labs & Nordic
✅ Wi-Fi 6, Thread & BLE
✅ Honest Pros & Cons
Matter is the smart home standard backed by Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung, and it runs over two transports: Wi-Fi for powered devices and Thread, a low-power IPv6 mesh, for battery devices like sensors and locks. To build your own Matter device you need a chip with the right radio and a vendor SDK with Matter support. The three ecosystems that dominate are Espressif (ESP32-C6, ESP32-H2), Silicon Labs (EFR32MG24) and Nordic (nRF52840, nRF54L15).
This guide compares 14 development boards on Amazon for Matter and Thread projects, from beginner-friendly Arduino boards to the official kits that product teams use. Building a Zigbee device instead? See our Zigbee development boards guide. Need a border router to connect Thread devices to your network? See best Thread border routers.
💡 Reality check before you buy: A board that says “Matter” only means its chip can run a Matter stack. You still need the vendor SDK (ESP-Matter, Silicon Labs Simplicity/Arduino core, or nRF Connect SDK) and a commissioner (Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant). Matter-over-Thread devices also need a Thread border router on your network. Selling a product with the Matter logo requires CSA certification and proper attestation certificates; dev boards ship with test credentials for development only. Some listings overstate features (one Nano Matter listing mentions Wi-Fi, which the board does not have), so check the chip, not the marketing.

🔍 How to Choose a Matter Development Board
📡
Wi-Fi or Thread?
Mains-powered devices like plugs and lights can use Matter over Wi-Fi (ESP32-C6). Battery devices like sensors should use Thread (ESP32-H2, EFR32MG24, nRF52840, nRF54L15) for much lower power.
🧰
SDK and Toolchain
Espressif uses ESP-IDF with ESP-Matter (plus Arduino support). Silicon Labs offers Simplicity Studio and an Arduino Matter library. Nordic uses nRF Connect SDK on Zephyr. Pick the toolchain you want to learn.
🐞
Debugging
Official DKs include an onboard debugger and current-measurement options, which matter for low-power Thread work. Tiny XIAO-style boards rely on USB and external probes.
💾
Flash Size
Matter firmware is large, and OTA updates need room for a second image. 4 MB is workable on the H2; 8–16 MB on ESP32-C6 boards gives more headroom.
🏁
Prototype vs Product
For a product, prototype on the same chip family and module you’ll certify, so your Matter and radio certification path stays simple.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add my DIY Matter device to Apple Home or Google Home?
Yes. Development builds use test attestation credentials, so ecosystems will warn that the device is uncertified, but you can still commission it for personal use. Google and Amazon may require registering a developer project for test devices.
Do I need a Thread border router?
For Matter over Thread, yes. Many Apple TV, HomePod, Google Nest and Echo models include one, or you can build one with an nRF52840 or ESP32-H2 RCP. See our Thread border routers guide. Matter over Wi-Fi devices don’t need one.
ESP32-C6 or ESP32-H2?
Choose the C6 if you want Wi-Fi or flexibility; it can do Matter over either Wi-Fi or Thread. Choose the H2 for a dedicated low-power Thread device or as an RCP; it has no Wi-Fi.
Can the same board do Zigbee too?
All 802.15.4 chips here can run Zigbee with the right firmware, though not usually at the same time as Thread. See our Zigbee development boards guide for Zigbee-focused picks.
What does it take to sell a Matter product?
Joining the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), testing at an authorized lab, obtaining production device attestation certificates, and usually Thread Group certification for Thread devices, plus regional radio approvals. Using a pre-certified module simplifies the radio side.
