Sensor Accuracy

Sensors built on Swiss Sensirion chips, as SONOFF uses, typically quote about ±0.2 °C and ±2 %RH. Cheaper sensors may be ±0.3 to ±1 °C. Tighter accuracy matters for thermostats, nurseries and grow tents.

Display or Screenless

An LCD or e-ink screen lets family members read the room without an app. Screenless sensors are smaller, cheaper and better for attics, closets, server racks and fridges.

Weatherproofing & Probes

Outdoors and in greenhouses, choose an IP65 housing. For freezers, pools, aquariums or pipes, a sensor with an external stainless-steel probe keeps the electronics outside the cold or wet zone.

Battery & Refresh Rate

AAA cells are cheap to replace and last a long time; coin cells allow smaller sensors. Faster refresh rates and big screens drain batteries quicker, so tune reporting thresholds in your hub.

Hub & App Support

Most of these work with Echo Zigbee hubs, SmartThings, Hubitat and Home Assistant. Alexa may show temperature only, while Home Assistant gives full history, graphs and automations.

The SNZB-02DR2 AirGuard TH is SONOFF’s upgraded display sensor. Its large LCD shows current readings plus daily highs and lows, the Swiss Sensirion sensor keeps accuracy tight, and SONOFF says it can even show another room’s readings on its screen for multi-room monitoring. The app adds charts and alerts when values cross your limits. With more than 680 ratings averaging about 4.4 stars, it’s a great kitchen, nursery or office display.

SONOFF’s newest climate sensor, the SNZB-02UL, swaps LCD for a crisp e-ink screen with a nearly 180-degree viewing angle that’s easy to read in daylight. Beyond temperature and humidity, it shows time, date and weather, and the app lets you view and export up to six months of data. It uses a Swiss sensor and works with Zigbee hubs and Home Assistant. It’s newer, with around 130 ratings, but they average about 4.7 stars.

For patios, greenhouses, garages and bathrooms, the SNZB-02WD wraps a temperature and humidity sensor and LCD in an IP65 waterproof housing. A special breathable membrane lets humidity reach the sensor while keeping water out. It has more than 580 ratings at around 4.3 stars. Outdoor placement often needs a Zigbee router nearby, and direct sun will inflate readings, so mount it in shade.

Some things are too cold, hot or wet for a normal sensor. The SNZB-02LD keeps its LCD unit outside and runs a 1.5 m stainless-steel probe into freezers, fridges, aquariums, pools, hot tubs or water heater pipes. It measures from -40 to 115 °C, and the main unit is IP65 rated against splashes. It has more than 1,000 ratings averaging about 4.1 stars. Note that it measures temperature only, not humidity.

The SNZB-02P is the screenless workhorse for places nobody looks: attics, crawl spaces, closets, server cabinets and under-sink cabinets. SONOFF rates its CR2477 battery for up to four years based on internal testing, and it has more than 1,600 Amazon ratings averaging about 4 stars. It’s cheap enough to log every corner of the house.

THIRDREALITY’s Lite sensor drops the screen to cut cost while improving accuracy to about ±0.3 °C between -15 and 50 °C, according to the listing. It pairs directly with Echo Zigbee hubs and other Zigbee hubs and has around 500 ratings averaging about 4.3 stars. As with THIRDREALITY’s display model, the Alexa app shows temperature but not humidity.

The SNZB-02B AirGuard TH Lite uses the same Swiss sensor class as SONOFF’s premium models, rated at ±0.2 °C and ±2 %RH, with fast refresh, but runs on standard AAA batteries you can buy anywhere. It’s a newer listing with around 190 ratings averaging about 3.7 stars, so early units may be less polished than the long-running 02D.

Danish brand frient makes a Zigbee sensor that adds VOC (volatile organic compounds) monitoring to temperature and humidity, giving you a fuller picture of indoor air in kitchens, bedrooms and offices. It works with compatible Zigbee hubs and can trigger fans or ventilation when the air gets stale. It had about 60 ratings averaging 3.5 stars and only 12 units in stock when we checked, so treat it as a niche pick.

THIRDREALITY’s new Smart Air Quality Sensor monitors four values at once: CO₂, VOC, temperature and humidity. CO₂ is the best indicator of a stuffy, poorly ventilated room, so this sensor can open a window actuator or run an ERV when a bedroom or office needs fresh air. It is USB powered, needs a Zigbee hub, and lists Home Assistant among supported platforms. It was a brand-new listing with no reviews and unclear stock status when we checked, so confirm availability before ordering.

eMylo’s 3-pack of IP65 Zigbee sensors is the cheapest way to put weatherproof sensors in a garden, greenhouse and garage at once. eMylo advises pairing within about 6 feet of the hub for a reliable connection and notes the Alexa app shows temperature only. It had around 24 ratings averaging 3.3 stars when we checked, so expect some variability; the SONOFF SNZB-02WD is the more proven outdoor pick.

Why doesn’t Alexa show humidity from my Zigbee sensor?

Several brands, including THIRDREALITY and eMylo, state that the Alexa app displays temperature only. The sensor still measures humidity, but Alexa doesn’t expose it. To see and automate on humidity, use the brand’s own app (where supported) or a hub like Home Assistant, Hubitat or SmartThings.

Where should I place a temperature sensor?

Put it at about chest height on an interior wall, away from windows, direct sunlight, heating vents, kitchen appliances and electronics. For thermostat control, place it where people actually sit or sleep. Outdoors, mount it in shade under an overhang so sun and rain don’t skew readings.

What humidity level should I aim for at home?

Most homes are comfortable between about 40 and 60 %RH. Sustained humidity above 60 % encourages mold and dust mites, while very low humidity dries skin and wood. Use your sensor to trigger a dehumidifier, bathroom fan or humidifier through a smart plug when readings leave that range.

Can a Zigbee sensor alert me if my freezer fails?

Yes. Put a probe sensor like the SNZB-02LD’s probe inside the freezer with the unit outside, and set an alert in your hub when the temperature rises above, say, -12 °C. Batteries and radio signals struggle inside a metal freezer, which is why the external-probe design is more reliable than dropping a normal sensor inside.

Zigbee or Matter temperature sensors?
