A19/E26 suits lamps and most fixtures, BR30 fits recessed cans, GU10 fits track and spot lights, and B39/E12 candles fit chandeliers. Check your fixture’s base and size before anything else.

White, Tunable or Color

Plain white bulbs dim only. Tunable white (White Ambiance) shifts from warm to cool daylight, which is great for circadian lighting. Full color bulbs add millions of colors for accents and scenes.

Brightness

Around 800 lumens matches a 60W bulb; 1,100 lumens matches roughly a 75W bulb. Color bulbs are often dimmer in saturated colors, so check the white brightness rating for main room lighting.

Hub Compatibility

Hue bulbs work with almost every Zigbee hub plus the Hue Bridge. Third-party bulbs usually work with Echo, SmartThings, Hubitat and Home Assistant, but may lose some Hue-app features on a Hue Bridge.

Mesh Routing

Zigbee bulbs are mains-powered, so they relay signals for battery sensors. That only helps if they stay powered, so pair them with smart switches or remotes instead of the wall switch.

Hue’s newer Essential line is Philips’ answer to cheap color bulbs. You get color and white light with smooth dimming at a noticeably lower price per bulb than the standard White and Color Ambiance, and Philips lists expanding your setup with a Hue Bridge, which runs over Zigbee. It has more than 1,000 ratings at around 4.5 stars. Expect fewer premium extras than the flagship bulb, so it suits secondary rooms and bulk installs best.

Most rooms don’t need color, just good dimmable light. The Hue White A19 gives you 800 lumens of soft warm white with Hue’s excellent dimming curve, and with more than 19,000 Amazon ratings it is one of the most-reviewed smart bulbs anywhere. It works with the Hue Bridge and other Zigbee hubs, and it is the cheapest way to get Hue reliability in hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms.

Tunable white is the most useful lighting upgrade: cool, energizing light in the morning and warm, relaxing light at night. The latest Hue White Ambiance A19 listing advertises a very wide color-temperature range and higher brightness than the older generation, and it automates beautifully with Home Assistant’s adaptive lighting or Hue’s natural light scenes. It is a newer listing with fewer reviews than older Hue bulbs.

Recessed ceiling cans need a BR30 flood bulb that spreads light evenly, and the Hue BR30 2-pack brings Hue’s dimming and color quality to kitchens, hallways and living rooms with downlights. It screws into a standard E26 socket and has more than 500 ratings at around 4.7 stars. Six to eight cans per room adds up fast at Hue prices, so consider the THIRDREALITY ZB3 below for bigger rooms.

For kitchens and basements with lots of downlights, THIRDREALITY’s ZB3 BR30 4-pack is the budget way to make every can smart. Each bulb is rated at 650 lumens, adds color, and works as a Zigbee repeater with Echo devices and other Zigbee hubs. It has around 95 ratings, so it is less proven than the A19 ZL1, but it costs a fraction of Hue BR30s per can.

Track lights, spot fixtures and many under-cabinet fittings use GU10 bulbs. Hue’s GU10 White and Color Ambiance 2-pack delivers 450 lumens per bulb with full color and tunable white, so you can highlight art or a kitchen island with the same scenes as the rest of your Hue lights. Check that your fixture is line-voltage GU10 (not 12V MR16) before buying.

LEDEPLY’s Zigbee GU10 bulbs are the budget alternative for track lighting. The listing is clear that these are Zigbee, not Wi-Fi, and need a Zigbee hub such as an Echo with a built-in hub (standard Echo Dots and Google Home won’t work on their own). They add color and white light at a much lower price than Hue GU10s and have more than 500 ratings at around 4.0 stars. Expect less consistent color matching between bulbs than with Hue.

Chandeliers, sconces and ceiling fans often use small E12 candelabra sockets, and Hue’s B39 Candle brings full color and tunable white to them at 450 lumens per bulb. With more than 1,900 ratings at around 4.7 stars, it is the most proven smart candle bulb we found. A full chandelier needs several bulbs, so the cost adds up, but the light quality is excellent.

Exposed-bulb pendants and lamps need something that looks good switched off. Hue’s ST19 Vintage Edison uses a visible filament design with tunable warm white light, so you can go from candle-like glow to a brighter warm white. It has more than 430 ratings at around 4.6 stars. Filament bulbs are less bright than standard A19s and don’t do color, so they are a style pick for living spaces and restaurants-at-home looks.

European brand innr specializes in Zigbee bulbs that join an existing Philips Hue Bridge or another Zigbee hub. This A19 White & Color 4-pack is rated at a bright 1,100 lumens, brighter than the standard Hue color bulb, at a lower price per bulb. innr is upfront about the limits: through a Hue Bridge it does not support HomeKit, Hue Entertainment or Hue Secure. The US listing had only about 30 ratings when we checked.

For years, Sengled’s Zigbee bulbs were the default cheap pick for Echo owners, and this listing still has more than 7,400 ratings. They are Zigbee only and pair directly to an Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub, SmartThings and other Zigbee hubs, which means they run locally and don’t depend on Sengled’s own cloud. Sengled has had well-publicized service problems with its app and Wi-Fi products, and Amazon showed only 15 in stock when we checked, so buy these only if you want a low-cost white bulb for an existing Zigbee hub.

Do Zigbee bulbs need a hub?

Yes. Zigbee bulbs don’t connect to Wi-Fi, so they need a Zigbee hub: a Philips Hue Bridge, an Echo model with a built-in Zigbee hub, SmartThings, Hubitat, Homey or a Home Assistant coordinator. Will non-Hue Zigbee bulbs work with the Hue Bridge?

Many do, but not all features carry over. innr bulbs are designed to join a Hue Bridge, though without HomeKit or Hue Entertainment support through it. Other brands may pair only as basic lights or not at all. If you want to mix brands freely, an open hub like Home Assistant or Hubitat is the better choice.

Which Echo devices have a built-in Zigbee hub?

Only certain Echo models include a Zigbee hub, such as the Echo Hub and some Echo and Echo Show generations. Standard Echo Dots generally do not. Check your Echo’s specs in the Alexa app or on Amazon before buying Zigbee-only bulbs like Sengled, LEDEPLY or THIRDREALITY.

Zigbee or Matter bulbs: which should I buy?

If you already have a Zigbee hub, Zigbee bulbs are mature, affordable and strengthen your mesh. If you want bulbs that work directly with Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa with no extra hub, look at Matter bulbs instead; see our best Matter color smart bulbs guide. Why do my Zigbee sensors drop when I turn off the lights?

Because your bulbs were routing their traffic. When a bulb loses power at the wall switch, devices that connected through it have to find a new path, and some battery sensors are slow to do so. Keep bulbs powered and control them with smart switches, remotes or automations, or add smart plugs as permanent routers.
