✅ Honest Pros & Cons
A leak sensor tells you there’s a problem. A Z-Wave water shut-off valve actually stops it. When a washing machine hose bursts or a water heater lets go, a typical supply line can pour out gallons every minute, and the damage builds up long before anyone gets home to turn the main valve. A Z-Wave valve sits on your main water line and closes it the moment your hub sees a leak sensor trip, or when you tap a button on your phone from the airport. Because Z-Wave runs on its own sub-GHz radio (908 MHz in the US), these valves stay off your Wi-Fi, join the same mesh as your locks and sensors, and keep working locally on Home Assistant, Hubitat and Z-Box when the internet is down.
They come in three very different shapes. Valve robots like the Zooz Titan and EcoNet Bulldog clamp over the quarter-turn ball valve you already have, so there’s no pipe cutting. Inline motorized valves like Ezlo’s replace a section of pipe and usually need a plumber, but give you a clean, sealed install. And DIY builds pair a Zooz Z-Wave relay with an off-the-shelf motorized ball valve for makers who want full control. This guide ranks 12 Z-Wave shut-off picks on what matters once they’re bolted to your main: valve size support, install effort, offline behaviour, hub compatibility and track record.
💡 Reality check before you buy: Valve robots only work on a quarter-turn ball valve with a lever handle; if your main is an old round-handle gate valve, a plumber needs to swap in a ball valve first. Measure clearances before ordering, because robots need room around the pipe and handle, and a robot that can’t fully seat won’t fully close. Every pick here needs mains power through an adapter, so during an outage they can’t move until power returns; plan for a manual close. Most need a Z-Wave hub for wireless leak sensors and phone control (the Titan and Bulldog WLS1M can also close from a directly connected probe, and two Ezlo kits include a hub). Ezlo inline valves cost far more and need plumbing work. The DIY relay builds are for people comfortable with low-voltage wiring. Finally, these are US/Canada (908 MHz) products.

🔍 What to Look for in a Z-Wave Water Shut-Off Valve
🔧
Valve Robot vs Inline Valve
A robot clamps over your existing lever ball valve with no plumbing and moves with you when you sell the house. An inline valve replaces a section of pipe, usually with a plumber, and suits homes with gate valves or no room for a robot.
📐
Valve Size & Clearance
Check your main’s diameter first. The Titan covers 0.5 to 1.25 in, the Bulldog 3/4 to 1.5 in, and Ezlo sells 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 in valves. Robots also need space around the pipe, handle and wall, so measure before you order.
💪
Motor Torque
Main valves that sit open for years get stiff. Weak actuators stall halfway, which is worse than no actuator at all. Zooz and EcoNet both market high-torque motors for exactly this reason; still exercise the valve monthly.
📴
Offline Shut-Off
If your hub crashes, a valve with a directly wired leak probe (Titan, Bulldog WLS1M) still closes on its own. On DIY builds, the ZEN17’s inputs can trigger its relays locally without the hub.
📡
Radio & Hub Fit
Valves are often in a basement corner far from the hub. Zooz’s Long Range models help, and since valves are mains powered they also repeat the mesh. Check your hub: Ring Alarm users should stick to the Titan or Bulldog, which list Ring support.

🥇 BEST OVERALL
Zooz Titan Water Valve Actuator ZAC36
⭐ 4.7/5 · The Strongest, Simplest Retrofit
Buy on Amazon →

The Zooz Titan ZAC36 is the Z-Wave shut-off we’d put on most homes. It clamps over a standard 0.5 to 1.25 inch ball valve with no tools and no plumbing, then calibrates itself to that specific valve so it knows exactly where open and closed are. Zooz built it around a powerful motor specifically to turn stiff, rarely used main valves, which is where cheaper robots fail. It ships with a plug-in leak detector probe: even with no hub, if that probe gets wet the Titan closes the water. Add it to a Z-Wave hub and any wireless leak sensor in the house can trigger it. The 700 Series Long Range radio helps in basements far from the controller, Zooz says it can be used outdoors, and the listing names Z-Box, SmartThings, Hubitat, Ring Alarm and Home Assistant. The one firm rule: measure first. Zooz requires 3 in of clearance from the valve center to each side, at least 1.25 in between handle and pipe, and 1 in between pipe and wall.
✅ Pros- Strong motor, self-calibrating
- Leak probe included, works offline
- Long Range radio
- Ring Alarm and open hubs listed
❌ Cons- Strict clearance requirements
- Tops out at 1.25 in valves
- Needs mains power
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave water shut-off valve for most homes: tool-free, strong, works offline with its probe, and supported by nearly every Z-Wave hub including Ring.

🐶 MOST PROVEN
EcoNet Bulldog Valve Robot EVC200-HCSML
⭐ 4.6/5 · The Installer’s Long-Time Favourite
Buy on Amazon →

If you want the Z-Wave valve with the longest track record, it’s the Bulldog Valve Robot. The EVC200-HCSML listing carries the most Amazon ratings of any Z-Wave shut-off here, with a strong average, and owners consistently praise its rigid bracket and stout motor. Its big advantage over the Titan is valve size: it supports 3/4, 1, 1.25 and 1.5 inch ball valves, so larger mains are covered. EcoNet says its high-torque motor opens or closes a valve in about 18 seconds, and it installs over the existing valve with no plumbing. The hub list is the broadest here: SmartThings, Hubitat, Nexia, Control4, Universal Devices, Honeywell and Ring, plus Home Assistant users run it widely. A condo kit lets multi-unit buildings add a second slave robot. This listing is the robot only, so pair it with Z-Wave leak sensors (or buy the WLS1M bundle below), and note it’s an older Z-Wave Plus design without Long Range.
✅ Pros- Fits valves up to 1.5 in
- Largest review base of any pick
- Very broad hub support incl. Ring
- No plumbing required
❌ Cons- No leak sensor in this listing
- Older Z-Wave Plus, no Long Range
- Slower than DIY motorized valves
🎯 Verdict: The most proven Z-Wave valve robot, and the one to choose if your main valve is 1.5 inches or you run Control4, Nexia or Honeywell.

🔌 BEST WIRED-SENSOR BUNDLE · ⭐ 4.4/53. Bulldog Valve Robot EVC200-WLS1M (with Wired Leak Sensor)
Z-Wave Plus · 3/4 to 1.5 in ball valves · ~18 s open/close · wired leak sensor for direct shut-off
Buy →

This is the same Bulldog robot as pick #2, bundled with a wired leak sensor that plugs directly into the robot. That direct connection is the important part: if the sensor below the valve or water heater gets wet, the Bulldog closes the main without waiting on your hub, while still reporting over Z-Wave so your hub can alert you and trigger it from wireless sensors elsewhere. Everything else carries over: 3/4 to 1.5 inch valve support, about 18 second operation, no plumbing, the long hub list including Ring, and the condo kit option. The bundle listing itself is new with very few reviews, but the hardware inside is the proven EVC200.
✅ Pros: Direct offline shut-off; up to 1.5 in valves; same proven robot.
❌ Cons: Bundle has few reviews; wired sensor limits placement; no Long Range.
🎯 Verdict: Buy this instead of the bare robot if you want the Bulldog to protect you even when the hub is down.
🔩 BEST INLINE VALVE · ⭐ 4.3/54. Ezlo Z-Wave Smart Water Shut-Off Valve (1 in)
Lead-free brass ball valve + actuator · Z-Wave · works with SmartThings, Hubitat, Ezlo and other hubs · 3/4 and 1-1/4 in versions
Buy →

Not every home has a lever ball valve with room for a robot. Ezlo’s Z-Wave Smart Water Shut-Off Valve takes the other route: a lead-free brass ball valve and matched motorized actuator that get plumbed into the main line. The result is a tidy, purpose-built install with no clamps or brackets, which also suits homes that still have an old gate valve. Ezlo positions it as a standalone Z-Wave device that works with SmartThings, Hubitat, Ezlo and other Z-Wave hubs, so you’re not tied to its own ecosystem, and pairing it with Z-Wave leak sensors gives automatic shut-off. It’s sold in 3/4, 1 and 1-1/4 inch sizes, and Ezlo itself recommends a qualified professional to choose and install the correct size. It costs far more than a robot and the listing has no Amazon reviews yet.
✅ Pros: Clean sealed install; no clearance worries; open-hub compatible.
❌ Cons: Needs a plumber; much pricier than robots; no reviews yet.
🎯 Verdict: The best inline Z-Wave valve when a robot won’t fit or you’re re-plumbing the main anyway.
📏 BEST FOR LARGER MAINS · ⭐ 4.2/55. Ezlo Z-Wave Smart Water Shut-Off Valve (1-1/4 in)
Lead-free brass ball valve + actuator · 1-1/4 in · Z-Wave · open-hub compatible
Buy →

Larger homes, homes with irrigation off the main, and many newer builds run a 1-1/4 inch service line, which is past the Titan’s limit. This is the same Ezlo inline valve and actuator as pick #4 in the bigger size, so you keep the full bore of your main instead of necking it down. Features are identical: lead-free brass ball valve, Z-Wave actuator, compatibility with SmartThings, Hubitat, Ezlo and other Z-Wave hubs, and automatic shut-off when paired with leak sensors. If you’d rather keep your existing 1-1/4 inch lever valve and avoid plumbing, compare it against the Bulldog robots, which also handle that size.
✅ Pros: Keeps full 1-1/4 in flow; clean install; works with open hubs.
❌ Cons: Most expensive single valve here; plumbing required; no reviews yet.
🎯 Verdict: The pick for 1-1/4 inch mains when you want a plumbed-in valve rather than a robot.
🧠 BEST WITH BUILT-IN HUB · ⭐ 4.2/56. Ezlo Wi-Fi + Z-Wave Smart Water Shut-Off with Built-In Hub (1-1/4 in Kit)
Hub inside the actuator · Z-Wave + Wi-Fi · 20,000-cycle rated actuator · manual override handle · Alexa
Buy →

Here the valve is the hub. Ezlo’s built-in-hub kit puts a Z-Wave smart home controller inside the valve actuator and connects it to your network over Wi-Fi, so you can add Z-Wave leak sensors straight to the valve and get phone alerts without buying a separate hub. Ezlo rates the actuator for 20,000 on/off cycles, includes a manual override handle for power outages, and lists Alexa voice control. This kit is the 1-1/4 inch version, with 3/4 and 1 inch valve options in Ezlo’s range. It’s the right pick for a vacation home or rental where the only smart device you need is leak protection. If you already run Home Assistant or Hubitat, a standalone valve or robot makes more sense than adding a second controller.
✅ Pros: No separate hub needed; manual override; 20,000-cycle rating.
❌ Cons: Plumbing required; Ezlo app lock-in; pricey; no reviews yet.
🎯 Verdict: The best choice when the shut-off valve should also be your only Z-Wave controller.
🧰 BEST COMPLETE KIT · ⭐ 4.1/57. Ezlo Smart Water Shut-Off Valve Control Kit with Ezlo Plus Hub (1 in)
Ezlo Plus hub (Z-Wave, Zigbee, Wi-Fi) · 3 Z-Wave leak sensors with probes · 1 in valve · 1-1/4 in kit also listed
Buy →

This is the “everything in one box” Ezlo option. You get the Z-Wave water valve, a separate Ezlo Plus hub that speaks Z-Wave, Zigbee and Wi-Fi, and three Z-Wave leak sensors with water probes, enough to cover a kitchen, laundry room and water heater from day one. Because the hub is separate rather than built into the valve, it can also run the rest of your smart home (locks, lights, thermostats), and the listing calls out remote valve control, automatic timers and Alexa. This is the 1 inch kit; there’s a matching 1-1/4 inch version. Expect a premium price and plumbing for the valve, and note both listings are new with no reviews yet.
✅ Pros: Valve, multi-protocol hub and 3 sensors; expandable to a whole smart home.
❌ Cons: Highest price here; plumbing required; no reviews yet.
🎯 Verdict: The most complete leak protection package if you’re starting from zero and want a hub that grows with the house.
🏠 BEST STARTER BUNDLE · ⭐ 4.0/58. EzloPlus Whole Home Leak Protection Kit (1 in)
EzloPlus hub (Z-Wave + Zigbee) · 2 water leak sensors · 1 in Z-Wave shut-off valve · 1-1/4 in kit also listed
Buy →

Ezlo’s newest bundle trims the kit above to the essentials: an EzloPlus hub supporting Z-Wave and Zigbee, two water leak sensors and a 1 inch Z-Wave smart shut-off valve. Out of the box the sensors signal the valve to cut the water when a leak is detected, alerts come through the Ezlo app, and Alexa or Google Assistant can control the valve. The hub is expandable, so you can add more sensors, switches and lights later. A 1-1/4 inch version is listed separately. Both listings are brand new, and when we checked, Amazon wasn’t showing a live price on the 1 inch kit, so open the listing to confirm stock before planning around it.
✅ Pros: Hub, sensors and valve pre-matched; Alexa and Google; expandable.
❌ Cons: Brand-new listing, stock may vary; plumbing required; Ezlo lock-in.
🎯 Verdict: A simpler, smaller starter bundle than pick #7 for homes that only need a couple of leak sensors.
🛠️ BEST DIY VALVE CONTROLLER · ⭐ 4.5/59. Zooz ZEN16 800LR Z-Wave MultiRelay
800 Series Long Range · 3 independent dry-contact relays · 1 to 240 V loads up to 20 A · USB-C 5 V or 12 to 24 V AC/DC power
Buy →

For makers, the cheapest reliable Z-Wave shut-off is a relay plus a motorized ball valve. The Zooz ZEN16 is the relay most people start with: three independent dry-contact relays rated for 1 to 240 V devices up to 20 A, an 800 Series Long Range radio, and power from either a 5 V USB-C supply or a 12 to 24 V AC/DC source, which is handy because many motorized valves run on 12 or 24 V. A common build is a 3-wire motorized valve with one relay driving “open” and another driving “close”, all inside a small enclosure next to the main. It has a big review base and strong ratings. Caveats from Zooz: it needs a Z-Wave hub, SmartThings needs a custom Edge driver, and alarm panels like Ring only get relay 1. You also need to choose and wire the valve yourself, which is where most DIY builds go wrong.
✅ Pros: Low cost; 3 relays; 12 to 24 V power matches valves; Long Range.
❌ Cons: Wiring skills required; no leak input; limited on Ring and SmartThings.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave brain for a DIY motorized shut-off on Home Assistant, Hubitat or Z-Box.
💧 BEST DIY WITH LEAK INPUT · ⭐ 4.5/510. Zooz ZEN17 800LR Z-Wave Relay
800 Series Long Range · 2 relays (NO 20 A, NC 10 A) · 2 inputs for 12 to 24 V or dry-contact sensors · inputs can trigger outputs
Buy →

The ZEN17 is the smarter DIY choice when you want the build to protect itself. Besides two relays (each with normally open and normally closed contacts), it has two inputs that accept 12 to 24 V or dry-contact signals, so you can wire a rope leak sensor, float switch or wired water probe straight into it. Zooz lets the inputs trigger the outputs, which means the valve can close even if the hub is offline, much like the Titan’s probe. Having both NO and NC contacts on each relay also makes it practical to drive a 2-wire reverse-polarity motorized valve like pick #12, where open and close are just the supply wires swapped. Like the ZEN16 it needs a Z-Wave hub, isn’t supported by Wink or alarm panels, and assumes you’re comfortable with low-voltage wiring.
✅ Pros: Wired leak input; local input-to-relay trigger; NO and NC contacts; Long Range.
❌ Cons: DIY wiring and configuration; not for alarm panels; valve sold separately.
🎯 Verdict: The best DIY Z-Wave controller when you want a wired leak sensor to close the valve without depending on the hub.
📦 BEST COMPACT DIY RELAY · ⭐ 4.3/511. Zooz ZEN58 800LR Low Voltage XS Relay
800 Series Long Range · dry-contact relay up to 3 A, 0 to 240 V · input for water/no-water sensors · S2 + SmartStart
Buy →

Zooz’s newest relay, the ZEN58 XS, is small enough to tuck inside the valve’s own junction box. It’s a single dry-contact relay rated to 3 A at 0 to 240 V, which covers the motor current of most small 12 or 24 V motorized ball valves, and it has an input that Zooz says accepts analog binary sensors such as water/no-water probes. With one relay it suits “power to open, spring or auto-return to close” style valves best, or a valve that has a separate always-on supply and a single control wire. It has S2 and SmartStart, Zooz offers a 5-year warranty with registration, and it’s tested with Hubitat, Home Assistant (Z-Wave JS) and HomeSeer, with SmartThings limited to basic on/off. The review pool is still small, and check your valve’s current draw against the 3 A rating.
✅ Pros: Tiny; sensor input; 800LR with S2; 5-year warranty on registration.
❌ Cons: Single relay, 3 A max; few reviews; basic SmartThings support.
🎯 Verdict: The neatest DIY option for single-control-wire valves where space is tight.
⚙️ BEST DIY VALVE BODY · ⭐ 4.3/512. U.S. Solid 1 in Motorized Ball Valve (304 Stainless, 9 to 24 V DC)
NSF certified · 1 in NPT full port · 2-wire reverse polarity · opens or closes in 3 to 5 s · limit switches · not Z-Wave on its own
Buy →

To be clear up front: this valve has no Z-Wave radio. It’s here because a DIY Zooz relay build needs a dependable valve, and the U.S. Solid motorized ball valve is one of the best-reviewed options on Amazon. It’s an NSF-certified 304 stainless steel body with 1 inch NPT threads and a full-port bore, so it doesn’t restrict flow on a 1 inch main. The actuator runs on 9 to 24 V DC, moves in about 3 to 5 seconds (far faster than any valve robot), and limit switches cut power at each end. It’s a 2-wire reverse-polarity design: supply one way to open, swap the wires to close, and it holds position with no power. Pair it with a ZEN17 wired as a polarity reverser, mount it in a dry spot, and plan for a plumber if you’re not comfortable cutting into your main.
✅ Pros: NSF stainless body; full port; 3 to 5 s operation; well reviewed.
❌ Cons: Needs a Zooz relay and wiring; plumbing required; check the listing’s normally open/closed notes.
🎯 Verdict: The valve half of the best-value DIY Z-Wave shut-off; pair it with a Zooz ZEN17.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get a valve robot or an inline motorized valve?
If your main shut-off is a quarter-turn ball valve with a lever handle and you have the clearance, a robot like the Zooz Titan or Bulldog is the easy choice: it installs in minutes, needs no plumber, and you can take it with you when you move. Pick an inline valve like Ezlo’s if your main is an old gate valve, there’s no room around the pipe, or you’re having plumbing work done anyway. Inline valves cost more and need a plumber, but give a cleaner, sealed install.
Do Z-Wave shut-off valves need a hub?
For wireless leak sensors, phone control and alerts, yes. The valve and sensors both report to a Z-Wave controller such as Home Assistant with a Z-Wave stick, Hubitat, SmartThings, Zooz Z-Box or Ring Alarm, which runs the “sensor wet, close valve” automation. The exceptions are valves with a directly wired probe (Zooz Titan, Bulldog WLS1M), which close on their own, and Ezlo kits that include or build in a hub. If you still need a controller, see our guide to the best Z-Wave hubs and USB sticks.
Which leak sensors should I pair with my valve?
Any Z-Wave leak sensor your hub supports will work, since the hub links them to the valve through an automation. Put one under every sink, behind the fridge and dishwasher, beside the washing machine, in the water heater pan and near the sump pump. Our guide to the best Z-Wave water leak sensors compares 12 options, including tiny 800 Series Long Range sensors and flood and freeze probes.
What happens during a power outage?
Every valve here runs from mains power through an adapter, so none can move until power returns, and it will stay in whatever position it was in. That’s usually fine because leaks rarely coincide with outages, but it’s worth plugging the valve and your hub into a small UPS. You can always close the water by hand: remove or release a robot from the handle, use the manual override on Ezlo’s built-in hub valve, or close an upstream manual valve on DIY builds.
Can I control a Z-Wave valve from Apple Home, Alexa or Google?
Not directly, because Z-Wave is its own radio protocol. Ezlo lists Alexa (and Google on the EzloPlus kit), and hubs like SmartThings, Hubitat and Home Assistant can expose the valve to Alexa or Google routines. For Apple Home, use a hub that bridges Z-Wave into Matter; our guide to the best Matter bridges for Zigbee and Z-Wave covers the options. If you’d rather skip Z-Wave entirely, our Matter smart water shut-off valve guide lists native Matter valves.
