🖧 Best Small PoE Switches for IoT, Cameras and Smart Homes
14 compact PoE and PoE+ switches compared: 5 and 8-port models from TP-Link, NETGEAR, Zyxel, YuanLey and Ubiquiti, plus 2.5G, passthrough and DIN-rail options.
✅ 14 Switches Reviewed
✅ PoE, PoE+ and PoE++
✅ Managed and Unmanaged
✅ Honest Pros and Cons
A PoE switch is the easiest way to power several IoT devices at once: every PoE port sends power and data down one Ethernet cable to a camera, access point, Raspberry Pi HAT, ESP32 PoE board or PoE splitter. The two numbers that matter most are the per-port standard (802.3af, at or bt) and the total PoE budget shared across all ports.
This is part two of our Ethernet and PoE for IoT series. Part one covers PoE splitters, injectors and HATs for Raspberry Pi, which pair with every switch below, and our ESP32 Ethernet and PoE boards guide lists microcontrollers that plug straight into a PoE port.
💡 Reality check before you buy: Add up your devices before you buy: a switch with four 30W ports but a 60W budget can only run two devices at full PoE+ load. Unmanaged switches cannot isolate cameras or untrusted IoT gadgets on a VLAN, so choose an Easy Smart or managed model if network segmentation matters. Cheaper switches stay 802.3af/at only, which will not power 802.3bt (PoE++) devices at full power. Passive 24V gear (some older radios) needs its own injector. Keep switches ventilated, since PoE power turns into heat in a closed cabinet.

🔍 How to Choose a PoE Switch for IoT
🔋
Total PoE Budget
Add the max draw of every device and leave 20 to 30% headroom. A Pi 5 on a PoE+ HAT or an access point can each use up to about 25W.
⚡
Per-Port Standard
802.3af (15.4W) suits splitters, small cameras and tablets. 802.3at PoE+ (30W) suits Pi 5 HATs and APs. 802.3bt PoE++ (60W+) suits PTZ cameras and Wi-Fi 7 APs.
🔐
Managed or Unmanaged
Unmanaged is plug and play. Easy Smart and UniFi switches add VLANs, QoS and IGMP snooping so cameras and IoT gear stay off your main LAN.
🚀
Speed and Uplinks
Gigabit is enough for most IoT. Choose 2.5G or a 10G SFP uplink for Wi-Fi 6E/7 APs, NAS links or many cameras recording at once.
🏭
Power and Mounting
Desktop switches use a wall adapter. Passthrough switches run from PoE themselves. DIN-rail models accept 12/24/48V DC for control cabinets.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How much PoE budget do I need?
Add the maximum draw of each device: a PoE splitter feeding a Pi 4 is around 8 to 13W, a Pi 5 on a PoE+ HAT up to about 25W, an IP camera 4 to 13W and an AP 10 to 25W. Add 20 to 30% headroom and choose a switch whose total budget covers it.
Can a PoE switch damage non-PoE devices?
No. Standards-based 802.3af/at/bt switches detect a valid PoE device before sending power, so laptops, TVs and routers on the same switch just get data. Passive PoE injectors are the exception.
Do I need a managed switch for IoT?
Not strictly, but a VLAN that isolates cheap cameras and Wi-Fi gadgets from your PCs is good practice. The TL-SG105MPE and TL-SG108PE add VLANs at a small step up from unmanaged models.
Can I power a Raspberry Pi 5 from a PoE switch?
Yes, with an 802.3at PoE+ port and a PoE+ HAT such as the GeeekPi P33 from our PoE splitters and HATs guide. An 802.3af port or splitter is not enough for a loaded Pi 5.
What is a PoE passthrough switch?
A switch powered by a PoE input instead of an AC adapter, which then shares part of that power on its own output ports. It is ideal where you have one cable but no outlet, though the output budget depends on the upstream PoE class.
