🌡️ Best Z-Wave Temperature and Humidity Sensors

12 Z-Wave climate sensors ranked for Home Assistant, Hubitat, SmartThings and Z-Box users, from tiny 800 Series Long Range room sensors and 6-in-1 multisensors to door and leak sensors with built-in humidity, freeze alarms and a plug-in option, with real specs, honest verdicts and direct Amazon links.

✅ 12 Sensors Reviewed ✅ Verified Amazon ASINs ✅ 800 Series Long Range Picks ✅ Honest Pros & Cons

A Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensor turns guesswork into data. Your thermostat only knows the temperature in the hallway where it hangs, but a few small sensors can tell your hub that the nursery is two degrees colder, that the bathroom humidity just spiked after a shower, or that the basement has been sitting at 70% RH for a week and is heading for mold. With that data, your hub can run the exhaust fan, switch on a dehumidifier, balance a mini-split or warn you before a pipe freezes. Because Z-Wave uses its own sub-GHz radio (908 MHz in the US), these sensors stay off your Wi-Fi, run for a year or more on a coin cell and keep reporting to local hubs like Home Assistant, Hubitat and Z-Box when the internet is down.

The catch is that “temperature and humidity” means very different things across Z-Wave products. Some are dedicated climate sensors, others are motion sensors, door sensors or leak detectors that happen to report temperature and humidity on the side, and a few only send a freeze alarm. Newer 800 Series models add S2 security, SmartStart and Z-Wave Long Range, while older 700 Series and Z-Wave Plus devices are still worth buying for specific jobs. This guide ranks 12 Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensors on what matters once they’re on the wall: what they actually measure, radio generation, battery life, size and which hubs support them.

💡 Reality check before you buy: Every sensor here needs a Z-Wave hub or controller; none of them connect to Wi-Fi or your phone on their own. Battery sensors save power by reporting on an interval or after a set change (for example every 0.5 °F or 5% RH), so don’t expect second-by-second graphs unless the sensor is USB powered. Consumer humidity sensors are typically accurate to about ±3% RH, which is fine for automations but not for lab work, and readings drift if you mount them on an exterior wall, near a vent or in direct sun. Several picks are mainly motion, door or leak sensors with climate readings added; three do not measure humidity at all (Zooz ZSE70, Aeotec TriSensor 8, HomeSeer HSM200), and the Ecolink is a freeze alarm rather than a thermometer. Long Range only works if your controller supports it, and these are US/Canada (908 MHz) products that will not pair with an EU controller.

🔍 What to Look for in a Z-Wave Temperature and Humidity Sensor

💧

Does It Really Measure Humidity?

Plenty of Z-Wave devices list “temperature” but skip humidity. If you want to drive a bathroom fan or dehumidifier, confirm the RH sensor is there. Dew point and mold-risk reports (aërQ, Door Window Sensor 8, Water Sensor 8) are a useful bonus for basements.

📡

Z-Wave Generation & Long Range

800 Series sensors bring S2, SmartStart, better battery life and optional Long Range for garages, sheds and attics. 700 Series and Z-Wave Plus units still work on any modern hub but stay on the regular mesh.

🔋

Power & Reporting Interval

Coin-cell sensors report on a timer or after a threshold change to save battery. USB or mains-powered models (MultiSensor 7, Q Sensor, Water Sensor 8, HSM200) can report more often and the mains-powered ones also repeat your mesh.

📏

Size & Operating Range

Tiny sensors like the ZSE44 and aërQ hide on a shelf or door frame. Check the rated operating range too: the ZSE44 is specified for about 40-90 °F, so a freezer or unheated garage in winter needs a different pick.

🏠

Hub Support

Home Assistant (Z-Wave JS), Hubitat, Z-Box, HomeSeer and Homey support nearly everything here. SmartThings sometimes needs an Edge driver, alarm panels often ignore humidity, and the Trane sensor only pairs with Trane systems.

Zooz ZSE44 800LR Z-Wave Long Range temperature and humidity XS sensor

The Zooz ZSE44 does exactly one job, temperature and humidity, and it’s the sensor most open-hub users can buy three or four of and forget. It measures just 2.2 × 1.3 × 0.2 in, so it disappears on a bookshelf, beside a bed or on the back of a door. Inside is an 800 Series radio with S2, SmartStart and Z-Wave Long Range (Zooz quotes up to 1,300 ft with a Long Range hub, about 300 ft line of sight on a normal mesh), which makes it a good fit for a detached garage office or a sunroom far from the controller. It runs on one CR2450 coin cell (included) for up to a year depending on how often you ask it to report, and the included bracket lets you mount it on a covered porch or under an eave out of direct sun and rain. Zooz lists support for Z-Box, Home Assistant (Z-Wave JS), HomeSeer, Hubitat, Homey and SmartThings; Ring Alarm sees temperature only. Two practical notes: Zooz rates operation at roughly 40-90 °F, and recommends Energizer, Panasonic or Maxell cells because the bitterant coating on child-safe Duracell coin cells can block battery contact.

✅ Pros
  • 800 Series with Long Range and S2
  • Tiny, discreet XS design
  • Bracket for sheltered outdoor use
  • Broad open-hub support
❌ Cons
  • Narrow 40-90 °F operating range
  • No display, no dew point report
  • Not for alarm panels
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensor for most homes: modern radio, tiny footprint and exactly the data your thermostat and humidifier automations need.

Aeotec MultiSensor 7 Z-Wave 6-in-1 sensor with temperature and humidity

If you’d rather put one device in a room than three, the Aeotec MultiSensor 7 is the pick. It reports temperature, humidity, light (0-30,000 lux), UV, motion and vibration, so the same unit can trigger a dehumidifier, keep lights off in daylight and flag movement. It uses a 700 Series (Gen7) radio with S2 and SmartStart and runs either on two CR123A cells (Aeotec claims multi-year life) or on micro-USB. USB power is the real advantage for climate monitoring: the sensor can report temperature and humidity much more often and doubles as a Z-Wave repeater. Mounting is flexible (wall, ceiling, shelf, corner or flush with Aeotec’s Recessor). The trade-offs are size compared with a dedicated climate sensor, no Long Range, and Amazon reviews that are mixed on long-term consistency.

✅ Pros
  • Six sensors including humidity and UV
  • USB power for frequent reports
  • Repeats the mesh on USB
  • Many mounting options
❌ Cons
  • 700 Series, no Long Range
  • Bulkier than climate-only sensors
  • Mixed reviews on consistency
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave multisensor when you want temperature and humidity plus motion and light from a single device.

🍄 BEST FOR MOLD & DEW POINT · ⭐ 4.3/5

3. Aeotec aërQ Temperature & Humidity Sensor

700 series · S2 · SmartStart · temp ±1 °C · RH 0-80% ±3% · dew point · 1.38 in square · CR2477
Buy →
Aeotec aerQ Z-Wave temperature, humidity and dew point sensor

The aërQ is Aeotec’s dedicated climate sensor and the only pick here built around dew point. Alongside temperature (rated -10 to 65 °C at ±1 °C) and relative humidity (0-80% at ±3%), it reports dew point so your hub, or Aeotec-aware software, can warn when a room sits in mold-friendly conditions. That makes it a smart choice for basements, closets on exterior walls and bathrooms without good ventilation. It’s tiny at 1.38 in square, mounts with tape (on top of a door frame is a favorite spot), runs on a CR2477 coin cell and uses a 700 Series radio with S2 and SmartStart. Aeotec’s store quotes two years of battery life, while the Amazon listing says a year or more. Amazon reviews are mixed, with most complaints about pairing on older hubs, so it’s best on a current Home Assistant, Hubitat or SmartThings setup.

✅ Pros: Dew point reporting; very small; published accuracy specs; long coin-cell life.
❌ Cons: 700 Series, no Long Range; RH range tops out at 80%; mixed Amazon reviews.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave climate sensor for basements and damp rooms where dew point and mold risk matter more than raw temperature.
🪟 BEST WINDOW + CLIMATE 2-IN-1 · ⭐ 4.4/5

4. Aeotec Door Window Sensor 8

800 Series · Long Range · open/close + tilt + vibration · temp + humidity (0-98% RH ±3%) · mold hazard + dew point
Buy →
Aeotec Door Window Sensor 8 Z-Wave Long Range with temperature and humidity

Aeotec’s newest contact sensor quietly makes a strong case as a climate sensor. The Door Window Sensor 8 detects open, closed and tilt positions with a 3-axis sensor (handy for tilt-and-turn windows and skylights), and adds built-in temperature and humidity sensing with mold-hazard and dew point reports. That combination enables one of the most useful automations in the house: pause the heating or AC when a window opens, and log the room’s climate while you ventilate. It’s an 800 Series device with Z-Wave Long Range, and Aeotec lists SmartThings and other certified Z-Wave hubs as compatible. It is new on Amazon with only a small number of reviews so far, and a sensor on a window frame will read slightly cooler in winter than one in the middle of the room, so treat it as a window-zone reading.

✅ Pros: Contact + tilt + climate in one; 800 LR; dew point and mold reports; replaces two devices.
❌ Cons: Very few reviews yet; window placement skews temperature; battery life not clearly published on the listing.
🎯 Verdict: The best choice when you want window security and room humidity from the same sensor.

5. Zooz ZSE11 Q Sensor 800LR

Temperature + humidity (0-100%) + motion up to 20 ft + light · 800 Series · Long Range · 2× CR123A or micro-USB
Buy →
Zooz ZSE11 Q Sensor 800LR Z-Wave temperature, humidity, motion and light sensor

Bathrooms need two things from a sensor: humidity to run the exhaust fan after a shower, and motion so the lights don’t switch off while you’re in there. Zooz’s Q Sensor covers both. It reports temperature, humidity (0-100%) and light, plus motion up to 20 ft, all on an 800 Series radio with Long Range support. It runs on two CR123A cells or micro-USB (one source at a time), and on USB it reports instantly and repeats the mesh, which is ideal near a bathroom outlet. The small multi-angle bracket makes corner mounting easy. Zooz publishes a specific list of supported hubs, SmartThings needs a custom Edge driver, and Amazon ratings trail the rest of the Zooz line, so check your hub before buying.

✅ Pros: Humidity + motion for fan and light logic; 800 LR; USB or battery; adjustable bracket.
❌ Cons: Larger than climate-only sensors; lower Amazon rating; limited official hub list.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave sensor for bathrooms and laundry rooms where humidity and occupancy drive the same automation.
💧 BEST LEAK + CLIMATE · ⭐ 4.3/5

6. Aeotec Water Sensor 8

800 Series · Long Range · leak + temperature + humidity + mold risk · battery up to 4 years or USB-C · 2.5 mm dry-contact input
Buy →
Aeotec Water Sensor 8 Z-Wave Long Range leak, temperature and humidity sensor

Basements, utility rooms and the space under a water heater are exactly where you want both leak detection and humidity data, and the Water Sensor 8 delivers both. Aeotec’s newest leak sensor detects water instantly while also reporting temperature, humidity and mold risk, so one device warns you about a burst hose and about a damp crawlspace. The 800 Series radio supports Long Range (Aeotec quotes up to a mile line of sight with a compatible hub). Power is flexible: the included battery is rated up to four years, or you can run it from USB-C for continuous power. A 2.5 mm input also lets you wire in dry-contact sensors such as reed switches. It’s a new listing with only a handful of reviews, so early buyers should expect the occasional firmware update.

✅ Pros: Leak + climate in one; 800 LR; up to 4-year battery or USB-C; dry-contact input.
❌ Cons: Very new with few reviews; floor placement reads cooler than room level; bigger than a coin-cell sensor.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave sensor for basements and utility rooms where you want leak alerts and humidity tracking from one device.
🧺 BEST PROVEN LEAK + CLIMATE · ⭐ 4.2/5

7. Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro

700 series (Gen7) · leak detection from 0.02 in of water · temperature + humidity · battery powered
Buy →
Aeotec Water Sensor 7 Pro Z-Wave leak sensor with temperature and humidity

The Water Sensor 7 Pro is the predecessor to pick #6 and still a solid buy, with a much longer track record on Amazon. It alerts your hub when it detects as little as 0.02 in of water and reports temperature and humidity, which Aeotec pitches for managing heating, cooling and bathroom ventilation. It uses Aeotec’s Gen7 (700 Series) radio with S2 and works with certified Z-Wave gateways including Hubitat, Home Assistant and Fibaro. Choose it over the Water Sensor 8 if you value a proven product with lots of reviews and don’t need Long Range; choose the 8 for the newer radio, USB-C power and dry-contact input.

✅ Pros: Leak + temp + humidity; sensitive 0.02 in detection; long review history; S2.
❌ Cons: 700 Series, no Long Range; superseded by Water Sensor 8; battery only.
🎯 Verdict: A proven leak and climate sensor for laundry rooms and bathrooms when you don’t need the newest radio.
❄️ BEST FREEZE ALARM · ⭐ 4.4/5

8. Ecolink FLF-ZWAVE5-ECO Flood/Freeze Sensor

Z-Wave Plus · freeze alert at 41 °F (5 °C) · leak detection with 36 in probe · 1× CR123A, rated 5 years
Buy →
Ecolink FLF-ZWAVE5-ECO Z-Wave Plus flood and freeze sensor with probe

Sometimes you don’t need a temperature graph, you need a loud warning before pipes freeze. The Ecolink FLF-ZWAVE5-ECO is built for that. It triggers a freeze alert at 41 °F (5 °C), early enough to act before a crawlspace or unheated garage pipe bursts, and doubles as a leak detector with a 36 in probe you can run under a sink or behind a washer. One CR123A lithium cell is rated for five years, which is ideal for a vacation home you rarely visit. It’s the highest-rated pick here on Amazon by review count. Understand what it is, though: a threshold alarm, not a thermometer that reports continuous readings or humidity, and it uses an older Z-Wave Plus radio without Long Range.

✅ Pros: Freeze + leak in one; 36 in probe; 5-year battery; strong reviews.
❌ Cons: Fixed 41 °F alarm, not continuous readings; no humidity; older radio.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave pick for freeze protection in crawlspaces, cabins and unheated garages.
🌧️ BEST OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE · ⭐ 4.1/5

9. Zooz ZSE70 800LR Outdoor Motion Sensor

IP66 · 800 Series · Long Range · temperature + light + motion up to 30 ft · 2× CR123A or 12-24 V AC/DC · no humidity
Buy →
Zooz ZSE70 800LR outdoor Z-Wave Long Range sensor with temperature monitoring

Most climate sensors here are indoor-only. If you want an outdoor temperature reading on your Z-Wave network, the Zooz ZSE70 is the weatherproof option: it carries an IP66 rating and reports temperature and light alongside motion up to 30 ft. That’s useful for logic like “close the shades when it’s hot and sunny” or “turn on the heat tape below freezing.” The 800 Series radio supports Long Range for detached garages and gates, and you can run it on two CR123A lithium cells (better in the cold than alkaline) or wire 12-24 V AC/DC for constant power. It does not measure humidity, and like any outdoor sensor it needs shade to avoid inflated readings in direct sun.

✅ Pros: IP66 outdoor rating; Long Range; optional 12-24 V wiring; motion and lux included.
❌ Cons: No humidity; sun exposure skews temperature; motion triggers from trees and cars.
🎯 Verdict: The best Z-Wave option for outdoor temperature readings, with motion and light as a bonus.
📐 BEST MOTION + TEMP COMBO · ⭐ 4.0/5

10. Aeotec TriSensor 8

800 Series · Long Range · temperature (±1 °C) + light + motion · 1× CR123A · indoor · no humidity
Buy →
Aeotec TriSensor 8 Z-Wave 800 Series temperature, motion and light sensor

The TriSensor 8 is for rooms where you want temperature for your thermostat plus motion and light for lighting, but don’t care about humidity: bedrooms, offices and living rooms in a dry climate. It combines temperature (±1 °C), light (up to 30,000 lux) and motion on Aeotec’s 800 Series platform with S2, SmartStart and Long Range. It runs on one CR123A; Aeotec quotes up to 2.5 years, while the Amazon listing is more conservative. Mount it with the arm bracket, tape or screws, or flush with Aeotec’s Recessor. If humidity matters, step up to the MultiSensor 7 or Q Sensor instead.

✅ Pros: 800 LR; temp + motion + lux for room automations; long claimed battery life.
❌ Cons: No humidity; no USB power option; mixed early reviews.
🎯 Verdict: A good 800 Series room sensor when temperature, motion and light cover what you need.
🔌 BEST NO-BATTERY OPTION · ⭐ 3.8/5

11. HomeSeer HSM200 Multi-Sensor

Z-Wave Plus · plugs into a 120 V outlet · temperature + motion + light · RGB status LED · mesh repeater · no humidity
Buy →
HomeSeer HSM200 Z-Wave Plus plug-in motion, temperature and light sensor

Tired of coin cells? The HSM200 plugs straight into a standard US outlet, so it never needs batteries and can report as often as your hub likes. It measures temperature, motion and light, and because it’s mains powered it also acts as a Z-Wave repeater, strengthening your mesh. A programmable RGB LED (seven colors) can double as a status light, for example glowing blue when a room is too cold or red when the alarm is armed. HomeSeer lists support for HomeSeer, Hubitat, Home Assistant and SmartThings. The downsides: no humidity sensor, an older Z-Wave Plus radio, a reading taken near the floor at outlet height, and Amazon ratings that are the weakest in this guide.

✅ Pros: No batteries ever; repeats the mesh; RGB status LED; frequent reporting.
❌ Cons: No humidity; outlet height skews readings; weakest reviews here.
🎯 Verdict: The pick when you want temperature data with zero battery maintenance and a stronger mesh.
🏠 BEST FOR TRANE COMFORTLINK · ⭐ 3.7/5

12. Trane ZSENS930AW00MA Z-Wave Temperature & Humidity Sensor

OEM Trane part · temperature + humidity · pairs only with Trane ComfortLink and AccuLink systems · non-returnable
Buy →
Trane ZSENS930AW00MA Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensor

This one is for a specific audience. The ZSENS930AW00MA is Trane’s own wireless Z-Wave remote sensor, and the Amazon listing is clear that it only pairs with Trane ComfortLink and AccuLink systems. If you have one of those communicating thermostats, this is the official way to add room-level temperature and humidity readings so your system can average or prioritize rooms, and it supersedes the older ZSENS930 part numbers. Published specs for this part list about ±1 °F temperature accuracy and a 10-90% humidity range. Do not buy it for Home Assistant, Hubitat or SmartThings, and note that the listing marks it non-returnable.

✅ Pros: Official Trane part; temp + humidity for system averaging; replaces older ZSENS930 models.
❌ Cons: Trane ComfortLink/AccuLink only; non-returnable; not for open Z-Wave hubs.
🎯 Verdict: The right pick only for Trane ComfortLink or AccuLink owners adding room sensors; everyone else should skip it.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do Z-Wave temperature and humidity sensors need a hub?

Yes. Z-Wave sensors have no Wi-Fi, so they report to a Z-Wave controller such as Home Assistant with a Z-Wave USB stick, Hubitat, SmartThings, Zooz Z-Box, HomeSeer or Homey, which stores the readings and runs your automations. The Trane sensor is the exception in that it pairs only with a Trane ComfortLink or AccuLink system. If you still need a controller, see our guide to the best Z-Wave hubs and USB sticks.

Where should I mount a temperature and humidity sensor?

Mount it on an interior wall at roughly chest height (about 4-5 ft), away from direct sunlight, HVAC vents, radiators, lamps, TVs and kitchen appliances. Exterior walls and window frames read cooler in winter and warmer in summer. In bathrooms, keep it out of direct shower spray but in the same room so humidity spikes register quickly. Give a new sensor an hour to settle before comparing it with another thermometer.

Why do my readings update so slowly?

Battery sensors sleep most of the time and only report on a timer or when the value changes by a set threshold. Most let you shorten the interval or lower the threshold in your hub’s device settings, at the cost of battery life; on coin-cell sensors you may need to wake the device with its button for new settings to apply. If you need near real-time data, choose a USB or mains-powered model such as the MultiSensor 7, Q Sensor, Water Sensor 8 or HSM200.

Can these sensors control my thermostat or dehumidifier?

Indirectly, through your hub. A common setup is to average several room sensors in Home Assistant or Hubitat and adjust a Z-Wave thermostat’s setpoint, or to switch a dehumidifier, humidifier or exhaust fan through a Z-Wave smart plug or switch when humidity crosses a threshold. Our guides to the best Z-Wave thermostats and best Z-Wave smart plugs cover the hardware on the other end.

Can I use these sensors outdoors, in a garage or in a freezer?

Check the operating range first. The Zooz ZSE44 is rated for about 40-90 °F and can sit on a covered porch in mild weather, while the IP66 Zooz ZSE70 is built for outdoor use (temperature only). For unheated garages and crawlspaces where freezing is the concern, the Ecolink flood/freeze sensor alerts at 41 °F. None of these picks is designed to sit inside a freezer; for that, use a dedicated probe-style sensor and keep the radio outside the metal box.
