Buttons and Press Types

A single button with single, double and long press gives three actions. Four buttons with four press types each can give 16. More actions means fewer devices on the wall, but also more to remember.

Dimming Control

Rotary dials (Hue Tap Dial, Lutron Aurora) feel the most natural for dimming. Button remotes use press-and-hold to dim, which works but is less precise.

Mounting

Magnetic wall plates let a remote live on the wall and come off when you need it. Adhesive mounts suit bedsides and desks. Toggle covers like the Aurora fit over existing switches.

Hub Compatibility

Hue remotes shine on the Hue Bridge; SONOFF and THIRDREALITY work with most hubs; Tuya and MOES remotes may need their own hub. Check before buying.

It requires a Tuya Zigbee hub. Ratings are mixed at about 3.6 stars from 110+ reviews, so it’s best for existing Tuya households.

This kit pairs Aqara’s popular Wireless Mini Switch (single, double and long press) with the Aqara M100 hub, which acts as a Matter bridge for Aqara Zigbee devices. Do Zigbee remotes work without a hub?

Generally no. A remote sends commands through a Zigbee hub or coordinator, which then controls the lights or runs automations. Some remotes can bind directly to compatible Zigbee bulbs, but that’s an advanced setup and support varies. Plan on using a hub such as the Hue Bridge, an Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub, SmartThings or Home Assistant.

Can Hue remotes control non-Hue lights?

In the Hue app, Hue remotes control lights connected to the Hue Bridge, which includes many third-party Zigbee bulbs. Paired to Home Assistant, Hubitat or SmartThings instead, every button press becomes an event you can use to control any device, including Wi-Fi and Z-Wave lights.

How long do Zigbee remote batteries last?

Most coin-cell Zigbee remotes last one to two years with normal use, because they only wake up when pressed. Heavy daily use, very cold locations or weak Zigbee signals that force retries can shorten that. Keep a few spare cells of the right type on hand.

Should I use a remote or a wired smart switch?

Why don’t double or long presses show up in my app?

Not every hub exposes every press type. Echo and some brand apps only see a single press, while Home Assistant, Hubitat and SmartThings usually expose all of them. If multi-press matters to you, check your hub’s device support or use Zigbee2MQTT, which lists the actions each remote supports.
