🔐 Best Matter Smart Door Locks
13 deadbolts, retrofit locks and lever locks ranked by a firmware engineer who ships Matter-certified products: UWB hands-free picks from Aqara, Schlage and ULTRALOQ, invisible Level locks, fingerprint value picks from eufy and ULTRALOQ, and Wi-Fi options from Kwikset, Yale and SwitchBot, with honest verdicts and direct Amazon links.
✅ 13 Smart Locks Reviewed
✅ Verified Amazon ASINs
✅ Thread vs Wi-Fi vs UWB Explained
✅ Honest Pros & Cons
A smart door lock is the one smart home device you touch every single day, and it is also the one you least want to get wrong. A lock that speaks Matter joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant with a single standard, runs locally on your home network instead of depending on one vendor’s cloud, and lets you build automations such as “turn on the hall light and disarm the alarm when the front door unlocks.” Switch ecosystems later and the lock on your door does not have to change.
“Matter lock” still covers very different hardware, though. Most locks run Matter over Thread, which saves battery but needs a Thread border router; a few run Matter over Wi-Fi or ship with Wi-Fi built in alongside Thread. The newest models add UWB (Ultra-Wideband) so the door unlocks as you walk up with an iPhone or Apple Watch, while others focus on fingerprints, face and palm recognition, or an invisible design that keeps your existing hardware. This guide ranks 13 Matter smart door locks on what matters at the front door: Matter transport, unlock methods, Apple Home Key, battery life, weather sealing, install type and how cleanly they behave in a Matter fabric.
💡 Reality check before you buy: Most Matter locks run on Thread, so remote access and Matter control need a Thread border router (a HomePod mini, HomePod 2nd gen, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub, recent Echo or similar). Apple Home Key and UWB hands-free unlock usually need an Apple Thread hub specifically, plus a recent iPhone or Apple Watch. Matter gives you lock, unlock, status and, on newer controllers, PIN codes, but fingerprints, face enrolment, guest schedules and firmware updates still live in the maker’s app. Measure your door before ordering: most picks fit standard US deadbolt preps (2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset, roughly 1-3/8″ to 2″ thick doors), but retrofit and lever models have their own requirements. Finally, read the battery claims as best-case figures; heavy use, cold weather and UWB scanning all shorten them.

🔍 What to Look for in a Matter Smart Door Lock
📡
Thread vs Wi-Fi
Thread is the natural fit for battery locks: it sips power, forms a mesh and responds quickly, but it needs a border router. Wi-Fi locks work with just your router and are easier to start with, at the cost of battery life. Several picks carry both radios.
📲
UWB & Apple Home Key
Apple Home Key lets you tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, even with a dead phone battery in Express Mode. UWB goes further and unlocks as you approach. Both depend on an Apple Thread hub, and the new Aliro standard aims to bring the same experience to Android wallets.
👆
Unlock Methods
Count who uses the door. Kids and older relatives do best with fingerprints or a keypad; guests need temporary codes; you may want hands-free. Always keep a mechanical key or another fallback for when the battery or electronics fail.
🔋
Battery & Weather
Rechargeable packs (Aqara, SwitchBot) avoid buying AAs but need a charging routine; AA locks (ULTRALOQ, eufy) are easy to swap. Look for an IP65 rating on the exterior unit if the door faces rain or direct sun.
🛠️
Install Type & Rating
Full deadbolt replacements change both sides of the door; retrofit locks (Aqara U200, Level Bolt) keep your exterior hardware, which suits renters. Check the BHMA/ANSI grade on the listing; Grade 1 or AAA is the top residential tier.
🏆 Detailed Reviews: All 13 Matter Smart Door Locks
🥇 BEST OVERALL
Aqara UWB Smart Lock U400
⭐ 4.7/5 · The Door That Opens as You Arrive
Buy on Amazon →

The Aqara U400 is the smart lock that finally makes “hands-free” real. Its UWB radio measures your phone or watch’s distance, direction and approach path, so the deadbolt retracts as you walk up rather than when you merely pass nearby, and it ignores you when you are already inside. Underneath that headline is a complete Matter lock: it is Matter-certified over Thread, works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant without an Aqara hub, and offers Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock, a fingerprint reader, a touchscreen keypad, NFC cards (sold separately), voice, app and a physical key. A removable rechargeable battery lasts up to about six months per charge and tops up over USB-C without taking the lock offline, and the exterior is rated IP65 with BHMA-certified hardware. Aqara has also been early with Aliro, the new cross-platform wallet-key standard. The fine print: UWB needs a Thread-enabled Apple home hub, iPhone 11 or later (not SE or 16e) on iOS 18.5+, or Apple Watch Series 6+; Android users still get fingerprint, code, NFC and Matter control. Amazon shows 4.1 stars from 400+ ratings.
✅ Pros- True UWB hands-free unlock
- Native Matter over Thread, no Aqara hub
- Home Key, fingerprint, keypad, NFC, key
- Rechargeable battery, IP65
❌ Cons- UWB is Apple-only for now
- Battery needs regular recharging
- Premium price
🎯 Verdict: The Matter smart lock to buy if you can. The most complete feature set on the market, built on a native Thread and Matter stack.

🏅 BEST VALUE
ULTRALOQ Bolt SE (Matter over Thread)
⭐ 4.6/5 · Fingerprint Lock With Both Radios
Buy on Amazon →

The ULTRALOQ Bolt SE is the lock we would point most people to if the Aqara is out of budget. It is unusual in carrying both radios: built-in Wi-Fi for app control and remote access with no hub (keep your router within about 70 ft), and Matter over Thread for Apple Home and other Matter controllers. ULTRALOQ says Thread’s low-power mesh stretches battery life to up to 18 months, which is exceptional for a fingerprint deadbolt. The reader stores 50 fingerprints, there is a keypad for codes, a built-in door sensor reports open or closed, and the exterior is IP65 with ANSI/BHMA certification. It is the most reviewed lock in this guide by far (10,000+ ratings at 4.3 stars, a pool the listing shares with ULTRALOQ’s related Bolt models). There is no Apple Home Key or UWB here; for those, look at the Aqara U400 or ULTRALOQ’s own Bolt Mission UWB.
✅ Pros- Thread and Wi-Fi in one lock
- Fast 50-print fingerprint reader
- Up to 18-month battery life
- Door sensor, IP65, huge review base
❌ Cons- No Apple Home Key or UWB
- Bulky exterior keypad
- Review count shared with sibling models
🎯 Verdict: The best-value Matter lock for families: fingerprints, long battery life and both Wi-Fi and Thread at a mid-range price.

🫥 BEST HIDDEN DESIGN · ⭐ 4.5/53. Level Lock Pro
Matter over Thread · Apple Home Key · door status detection · BHMA/ANSI Grade 1 · looks like a normal deadbolt
Buy Here →

If you don’t want your front door to look “smart,” the Level Lock Pro is in a class of its own. All the electronics, including the battery, are hidden inside a lock the size of a traditional deadbolt, so there is no box on the inside of the door and no keypad on the outside. The Pro adds what the older Level Lock+ lacked: built-in door status detection (open or ajar, no stick-on magnet), a faster hardware platform and BHMA/ANSI Grade 1 security ratings. It speaks Matter over Thread and supports Apple Home Key and NFC, plus physical keys. Remote access needs a Matter hub or Level’s Connect Wi-Fi bridge, and PIN entry needs the optional Level Keypad. Amazon shows 3.9 stars from about 150 ratings.
✅ Pros: Completely invisible tech; door status built in; Home Key; Grade 1 hardware.
❌ Cons: No keypad or fingerprint without add-ons; hub or bridge for remote use; premium price.
🎯 Verdict: The pick for design-conscious Apple homes that want Matter without changing how the door looks.

💵 BEST BUDGET · ⭐ 4.4/54. eufy Smart Lock E30
Matter over Thread · built-in Wi-Fi · fingerprint in 0.3 s · 8 AA batteries, up to 8 months · 15-minute install
Buy Here →

The eufy E30 was eufy’s first Matter product, and it remains one of the cheapest ways to put a fingerprint Matter deadbolt on your door. Under the hood it runs Matter over Thread on a Nordic nRF52840 (it is CSA-certified as a Thread device), with built-in Wi-Fi alongside for the eufy app. Fingerprints unlock in about 0.3 seconds, and you also get a keypad, app, voice and a physical key. Eight AA batteries last up to about eight months at ten unlocks a day, and it installs into standard US and Canadian doors in roughly 15 minutes without drilling. The Amazon listing headlines “Apple Home Ecosystem” support, but its spec table lists Matter as a feature and eufy confirms it connects over Matter over Thread through any Matter hub. There is no Apple Home Key. Ratings sit at 4.2 stars from about 380 reviews.
✅ Pros: Low price for a fingerprint Matter lock; Thread plus Wi-Fi; easy AA swaps.
❌ Cons: No Home Key; eight AAs to buy; eufy app needed for fingerprints.
🎯 Verdict: The budget Matter lock that doesn’t skimp on biometrics.

🏠 BEST RETROFIT / RENTERS · ⭐ 4.0/55. Aqara Smart Lock U200
Matter over Thread · fits over your existing deadbolt · Apple Home Key · fingerprint keypad included · rechargeable
Buy Here →

The U200 is a retrofit lock: it replaces only the interior thumb-turn, so your exterior deadbolt and keys stay exactly as they are, which makes it ideal for renters and for doors you don’t want to re-key. It has native Matter over Thread, was the first retrofit lock with Apple Home Key, and ships with a wireless fingerprint keypad for the outside of the door. A rechargeable battery lasts up to about six months, a gyroscope detects whether the door is closed, and a quiet mode slows the motor at night. Be aware of two things: Amazon’s rating is a weak 2.7 stars from 2,000+ reviews (installation fit and connection issues come up often), and some advanced Aqara features want the Aqara M3 hub. Check your door’s compatibility in Aqara’s guide before buying.
✅ Pros: Keeps your exterior lock and keys; Home Key; fingerprint keypad; Matter over Thread.
❌ Cons: Low Amazon rating; fit varies by door; recharge every few months.
🎯 Verdict: The Matter lock for renters and anyone who can’t replace the deadbolt, as long as you check door fit first.

🛡️ BEST NAME-BRAND UWB · ⭐ 4.2/56. Schlage Sense Pro UWB Smart Deadbolt
UWB hands-free unlock · Matter (Thread) · built-in Wi-Fi · Apple Home Key · up to 250 access codes
Buy Here →

Schlage is the lock brand many locksmiths trust, and the Sense Pro is its answer to the Aqara U400: a full deadbolt with UWB hands-free unlock and Apple Home Key. It works with Matter (iPhone and Apple Watch pairing requires a Thread-enabled Apple TV 4K, HomePod 2nd gen or HomePod mini), and unlike most Thread locks it also has built-in Wi-Fi for remote lock and unlock, history and up to 250 custom access codes in the Schlage app. You get Schlage’s mechanical build quality with a keypad and key backup. The listing is new and its rating is mixed so far (3.5 stars from about 60 reviews), so give early firmware a little patience.
✅ Pros: UWB plus Home Key; Matter and Wi-Fi; 250 codes; Schlage hardware.
❌ Cons: Young listing with mixed reviews; no fingerprint; UWB is Apple-only.
🎯 Verdict: The hands-free UWB lock for buyers who want a traditional lock brand on the door.

📱 BEST HOME KEY ON WI-FI · ⭐ 4.1/57. Kwikset Halo Select Plus
Wi-Fi and Matter enabled · Apple home keys tap-to-unlock · door status sensor · intrusion detection · 250 codes
Buy Here →

The Halo Select Plus takes Kwikset’s touchscreen Wi-Fi deadbolt and adds Apple home keys over NFC, so you can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock, along with a door status sensor and intrusion detection. Because Wi-Fi is built in, remote lock and unlock, geofenced auto-unlock and up to 250 guest codes work from the Kwikset app with no hub, and Matter brings it into Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa. It’s a good fit for households that want Home Key convenience without depending entirely on a Thread network. Amazon shows 3.5 stars from about 100 reviews; Wi-Fi locks also go through batteries faster than Thread-only models.
✅ Pros: Home Key tap; Wi-Fi with no hub; door sensor and intrusion alerts; 250 codes.
❌ Cons: Average ratings; Wi-Fi drains batteries faster; no fingerprint.
🎯 Verdict: The Home Key lock for homes that would rather lean on Wi-Fi than a Thread border router.

📶 BEST NO-HUB WI-FI LOCK · ⭐ 4.1/58. Kwikset Halo Select
Built-in Wi-Fi · Matter over Thread can be enabled · BHMA Grade AAA · touchscreen · geofence auto-unlock
Buy Here →

The standard Halo Select is the safe choice if you have no Thread border router today. It works straight away over built-in Wi-Fi with no hub, and the listing describes Matter as something you choose to enable via Thread later, so it can join a Matter fabric once your home has a border router. It carries a BHMA Grade AAA rating (the top residential tier), a touchscreen keypad, geofenced auto-unlock and an event log with door and lock status. There is no Home Key on this model; step up to the Select Plus for that. Ratings sit at 3.9 stars from about 270 reviews.
✅ Pros: Works on Wi-Fi with no hub; Grade AAA; Thread/Matter when you’re ready.
❌ Cons: Matter must be enabled separately; no Home Key; no fingerprint.
🎯 Verdict: A sturdy, hub-free starting point that grows into Matter later.

📡 BEST VALUE UWB · ⭐ 4.1/59. ULTRALOQ Bolt Mission UWB
Built-in UWB · Matter over Thread · NFC · IP65 · up to 18-month battery · BHMA top rating
Buy Here →

The Bolt Mission UWB is ULTRALOQ’s hands-free model: a built-in UWB radio unlocks the door when you actually arrive rather than when you are merely nearby, and it pairs that with Matter over Thread, NFC, a keypad and a mechanical key. ULTRALOQ quotes up to 18 months of battery life on Thread, an IP65 exterior and BHMA’s highest rating. It usually undercuts the Aqara U400 and Schlage Sense Pro, which makes it the value route into approach-to-unlock. It is a newer listing with 3.8 stars from about 45 reviews, so check recent feedback on UWB reliability before you commit.
✅ Pros: UWB for less; long Thread battery life; IP65; NFC and keypad.
❌ Cons: Small, mixed review base; UWB phone support varies; border router needed.
🎯 Verdict: The most affordable way to try UWB hands-free entry on a Matter lock.

🟢 BEST FOR GOOGLE HOME · ⭐ 4.0/510. Yale Smart Lock with Matter
Built with Matter (Thread) · designed for Google Home · keypad · BHMA Grade 2 · Yale Access app
Buy Here →

If your home runs on Google Home and Nest hubs, this Yale Smart Lock with Matter is the most natural fit. It is built on Matter and designed to sit inside Google Home, where you can lock, share access and track entries, while the Yale Access app covers the rest; remote access works through any Matter hub, so Apple Home and Alexa users are not shut out. It is a keypad deadbolt with Google Assistant voice control, app unlock and a backup key, rated BHMA Grade 2. Several finishes are listed (this link is Matte Black; there is also a Snow white version). The 3.4-star rating from about 290 reviews is the reason it sits mid-pack.
✅ Pros: Tight Google Home integration; Matter for other platforms; clean keypad design.
❌ Cons: Middling ratings; Grade 2 rather than Grade 1; no fingerprint or Home Key.
🎯 Verdict: The straightforward Matter lock for Nest and Google Home households.

🧑 BEST BIOMETRICS · ⭐ 4.2/511. SwitchBot Lock Vision Pro
CSA-certified Matter over Wi-Fi · 3D face + palm vein + fingerprint · 10,000mAh battery, about 12 months · IP65
Buy Here →

The SwitchBot Lock Vision Pro packs three biometric methods into one deadbolt: 3D face recognition, palm vein scanning and a fingerprint reader, plus NFC, keypad, app and key. It is one of the few locks here that runs Matter over Wi-Fi, CSA-certified, so it reaches Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant with no SwitchBot hub and no Thread border router. A large 10,000mAh rechargeable battery is rated for roughly 12 months and charges over USB-C, the exterior is IP65, and there’s no subscription. It’s the lock for families with kids or older relatives who struggle with codes. Amazon shows 4.1 stars from about 75 reviews.
✅ Pros: Face, palm vein and fingerprint; Matter over Wi-Fi, no border router; big battery; IP65.
❌ Cons: Large exterior unit; biometric enrolment stays in SwitchBot app; small review base.
🎯 Verdict: The most hands-off biometric lock here, and the easiest Matter setup if you have no Thread network.

🚪 BEST LEVER LOCK · ⭐ 4.2/512. ULTRALOQ Latch 5 Pro Smart Lever Lock
Matter over Thread + Wi-Fi · Apple Home Key · keypad, key fob and key · 6 AA batteries · lever handle
Buy Here →

Not every door has a deadbolt. Garage entry doors, home offices, side doors and short-term rental units often use a lever latch, and the Latch 5 Pro is the Matter option for them. It combines Wi-Fi for app control with Matter over Thread for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and it supports Apple Home Key alongside a keypad, an included key fob and a mechanical key. It runs on six AA batteries, which ULTRALOQ rates for well over a year in typical use. It’s a new listing (4.4 stars from about 30 reviews), and remember that a lever latch alone is less secure than a deadbolt on a main exterior door.
✅ Pros: Rare Matter lever lock; Home Key; Wi-Fi plus Thread; long AA battery life.
❌ Cons: Not a deadbolt; few reviews so far; check handing and door prep.
🎯 Verdict: The Matter lock for interior, office and garage-entry doors with a lever handle.

🔑 BEST KEEP-YOUR-HARDWARE · ⭐ 3.9/513. Level Bolt (Matter)
Matter over Thread · replaces only the bolt · keeps your keys and trim · up to 3 platforms at once
Buy Here →

The Level Bolt is the stealthiest upgrade here. It swaps only the bolt mechanism inside the door, so your existing exterior cylinder, interior thumb-turn and keys stay in place and nobody can tell the lock is smart. With Matter over Thread it can join up to three smart home platforms at once (Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Apple Home), for voice control and automations like “Alexa, lock the front door.” It has no keypad or fingerprint on its own; pair it with the Level Keypad if guests need codes. Amazon shows 3.5 stars from about 80 reviews, and fit depends on your existing deadbolt, so check Level’s compatibility notes.
✅ Pros: Keeps your keys and hardware; invisible; Matter multi-admin.
❌ Cons: No built-in keypad; border router needed; fit depends on existing lock.
🎯 Verdict: The invisible Matter upgrade for doors whose hardware you want to keep.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Do Matter smart locks need a hub?
Not a proprietary one, but most need a Thread border router. Locks that run Matter over Thread (Aqara, Level, eufy, Yale, ULTRALOQ Bolt Mission) talk to Matter controllers through a border router such as a HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub or recent Echo. Wi-Fi locks (SwitchBot Vision Pro, Kwikset Halo) skip the border router and join through your router, and the ULTRALOQ Bolt SE and Schlage Sense Pro carry both radios.
Is a Thread or Wi-Fi Matter lock better?
For battery-powered locks, Thread usually wins: it uses far less power, so batteries last many months longer, and its mesh keeps the lock off your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is simpler if you have no border router and want remote access straight from the maker’s app. If you are building a Matter home anyway, a Thread lock is the more future-proof choice.
What is UWB unlocking, and does it work with Android?
UWB (Ultra-Wideband) measures distance and direction precisely, so the lock can tell you are walking up to the door rather than standing inside next to it, and unlock without a tap. Today it works through Apple Home Key with a recent iPhone or Apple Watch and an Apple Thread hub. The new Aliro standard is designed to bring the same wallet-key experience to Android and other platforms, and Aqara has already started rolling it out on the U400.
Will a Matter lock still work if the internet goes down?
Yes. Fingerprints, keypads, NFC and physical keys are handled by the lock itself, and Matter control runs locally between your controller and the lock, so local automations keep working. You lose remote access from outside the house and any cloud-only features in the maker’s app until the connection returns. Keep a mechanical key or a charged backup battery for the rare case the lock itself goes flat.
Can I manage PIN codes and fingerprints through Matter?
Partly. Matter’s door lock cluster covers lock, unlock and status everywhere, and newer controllers such as Apple Home and Home Assistant can now create and delete PIN codes on supported locks. Fingerprint, face and palm enrolment, detailed guest schedules and firmware updates still go through each maker’s app, so expect to keep that app installed even if you control the lock day to day from Apple Home or Google Home.
