📡 Best Matter Motion and Occupancy Sensors

12 native Matter motion and presence sensors ranked by a firmware engineer who ships Matter-certified products. PIR and mmWave picks from Aqara, Eve, meross, LAFAER, THIRDREALITY and ANGELSHEEL, every one Matter over Thread or Matter over Wi-Fi, with honest verdicts and direct Amazon links.

✅ 12 Native Matter Picks ✅ Thread & Wi-Fi Only ✅ PIR vs mmWave Explained ✅ Verified Amazon ASINs

A motion or occupancy sensor is the device that makes a smart home feel smart. It turns hallway lights on at night, shuts the bathroom fan off when the room empties, and tells your thermostat nobody is home. With Matter, that sensor reports straight into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant over your local network, so automations fire in a fraction of a second and keep working when the internet drops. In Matter terms every one of these devices exposes an Occupancy Sensing cluster, which is why Apple Home and Google Home often label them “occupancy” rather than “motion”.

The catch is that a lot of listings say “works with Matter” when the sensor actually needs a brand hub to bridge it in. This guide only includes sensors with their own Matter radio: Matter over Thread for battery-powered sensors that last for years, and Matter over Wi-Fi for plug-in units. The 12 picks split into classic PIR motion sensors and newer mmWave presence sensors that keep the lights on while you sit perfectly still, ranked on detection technology, range, power, extra sensors and real-world reliability.

💡 Reality check before you buy: Every battery sensor here is Matter over Thread, so you need a Thread Border Router that is also a Matter controller: an Apple TV 4K or HomePod (2nd gen) or HomePod mini, a recent Nest Hub, an Echo with a Thread radio, a SmartThings hub, an Aqara M3 or Home Assistant with a Thread dongle. Plain PIR sensors only see movement, so if you read on the couch they will eventually switch the lights off; for that you want an mmWave presence sensor. mmWave is more sensitive, which also means more false triggers from fans, curtains and pets until you tune it. Advanced settings such as sensitivity, zones and timeouts are usually only available in the brand app, not in Apple Home or Google Home. Finally, Thread sensors connected to several Matter ecosystems at once drain their batteries faster than the box claims.

🔍 What to Look for in a Matter Motion or Occupancy Sensor

🧵

Thread or Wi-Fi, Not Bridged

Battery sensors should be Matter over Thread: it sleeps between reports and lasts one to three years on a cell. Wi-Fi only makes sense for plug-in sensors. Skip “Matter compatible” sensors that only reach Matter through a Zigbee or proprietary hub.

🧍

PIR Motion vs mmWave Presence

PIR detects body heat moving across its zones: cheap, reliable and frugal, but blind to someone sitting still. mmWave radar detects breathing-level micro-movement, so it knows a room is still occupied. Hybrid PIR + mmWave sensors give you both.

📐

Range & Field of View

Check both numbers. A 170° PIR covers a room from a corner, while a 90° unit suits a corridor. mmWave presence range is always shorter than its motion range, often 3.5 to 6 m for a seated person, so size the sensor to the room.

🔋

Power & Battery Life

mmWave radar is power hungry, so battery presence sensors use aggressive duty cycling and larger cells such as CR123A. If you want instant, always-on presence in a busy room, a wired or plug-in sensor avoids battery anxiety entirely.

💡

Extra Sensors & Water Rating

A built-in light sensor lets you skip turning lights on in daylight. Temperature and humidity add value in bathrooms and bedrooms. Look for IPX3 or better in bathrooms, and IP67 for basements, garages and covered outdoor spots.

🏆 Detailed Reviews: All 12 Matter Motion & Occupancy Sensors

All 12 picks are native Matter devices. Picks 1 to 8 are battery-powered Matter over Thread sensors, and picks 9 to 12 are always-powered plug-in sensors using Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread.

Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 Matter over Thread mmWave and PIR presence sensor

The Aqara FP300 solves the oldest motion sensor complaint, lights switching off while you sit still, without asking you to run a cable. It pairs a 60GHz mmWave radar with a PIR sensor: the radar holds occupancy while you read or work at a desk, and the PIR catches fast movement the instant you walk in. It also packs light, temperature and humidity sensors, so one small puck replaces three devices. Coverage is about 6 m with a 120° field of view, and it runs on two CR2450 coin cells. It ships with Matter over Thread firmware, so it joins Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Homey or Home Assistant directly through any Thread Border Router, and you can reflash it to Zigbee later if you move to an Aqara hub. With roughly 916 ratings it is also the most reviewed sensor in this guide. Two caveats: it cannot tell pets from people, and Aqara quotes longer battery life in Zigbee mode than in Thread mode.

✅ Pros
  • Detects people sitting still
  • Fully wireless mmWave + PIR
  • Light, temp and humidity built in
  • Native Thread, Zigbee optional
❌ Cons
  • Cannot distinguish pets
  • Shorter battery life on Thread
  • Fine tuning lives in the Aqara app
🎯 Verdict: The Matter occupancy sensor to buy for living rooms, offices and bedrooms. True presence detection with no wires.

Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 Matter over Thread PIR motion sensor

If you just need lights to react when someone walks into a hallway, stairwell, garage or laundry room, a good PIR sensor is still the most reliable and battery-friendly choice, and the Aqara P2 is the one we would buy. Its ultra-wide 170° PIR lens covers a whole room from a corner, it detects up to about 7 m, and a separate illuminance sensor lets you build “only when it’s dark” automations or use the light reading on its own. Two CR2450 cells are rated for up to two years. It is a native Matter over Thread device, works with any Matter controller that has a Thread Border Router, and supports Alexa Frustration-Free Setup on compatible Echos. Aqara has also pushed Matter 1.4 firmware to it. With about 669 ratings it has a long track record. Sensitivity and timeout adjustment are only exposed when you pair it to an Aqara Thread hub such as the M3.

✅ Pros
  • Very wide 170° coverage
  • Independent light sensor
  • Up to two years per battery set
  • Mature, well-reviewed hardware
❌ Cons
  • PIR only: misses still occupants
  • Tuning needs an Aqara Thread hub
  • Uses less common CR2450 cells
🎯 Verdict: The best classic motion sensor for Matter: wide, fast, long-lasting and fully hub-free.

3. Eve Motion (Matter)

Matter over Thread · PIR up to 9 m · light sensor · IPX3 · 2× AA · 600+ ratings
Buy Here →
Eve Motion Matter over Thread smart motion and light sensor

Eve was one of the first brands to put Thread in a motion sensor, and the Matter version of Eve Motion carries that over to every ecosystem. It detects movement up to 9 m, includes a light sensor, and its IPX3 rating means it shrugs off splashes, so it can live on a covered porch, in a bathroom or by the back door. Eve’s privacy stance is a big part of the appeal: no Eve account, no cloud and no tracking, with everything running locally over Matter over Thread. It runs on two standard AA batteries, which are easier to find than coin cells. Around 600 ratings average 4.0 stars. Third-party sellers often carry this single unit, so check the seller before you order.

✅ Pros: No account or cloud; 9 m reach; IPX3 splash rating; common AA batteries.
❌ Cons: PIR only; bulkier than coin-cell sensors; premium brand pricing.
🎯 Verdict: The privacy-first Matter motion sensor, and a natural fit for Apple Home households.

4. LAFAER LWR02 5-in-1 Presence Sensor

Matter over Thread · 24GHz mmWave + PIR · temp, humidity, light · 2× AAA · IPX3
Buy Here →
LAFAER LWR02 5-in-1 Matter over Thread mmWave and PIR presence sensor

The LAFAER LWR02 is the closest thing to an FP300 for less money. It combines a 24GHz mmWave radar for still presence with a PIR for walking movement, plus temperature, humidity and light sensing in one battery puck. LAFAER quotes about 4 m presence range and 8 m motion range across a roughly 120° view, and a hemispherical magnetic base lets you aim it at a desk or sofa. It runs up to two years on two AAA cells (rechargeables are supported), carries an IPX3 splash rating for bathrooms and kitchens, and joins Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant natively over Matter over Thread. Its review count is still modest (about 71) but the average of 4.4 stars is the highest of the presence sensors here.

✅ Pros: mmWave + PIR; 5 sensors in one; AAA cells; IPX3; strong early ratings.
❌ Cons: Shorter presence range than FP300; newer brand with a smaller track record.
🎯 Verdict: The value pick for true presence detection in small and medium rooms.

5. meross MS605 Presence Sensor

Matter over Thread · mmWave + PIR + light · IP67 · CR123A rated 3 years · 3 zones
Buy Here →
meross MS605 IP67 battery Matter over Thread presence sensor

Most presence sensors hate steam and cold, and the meross MS605 is built for exactly those places. It is an IP67 sealed, battery-powered mmWave + PIR + light sensor, with a CR123A cell (included) that meross rates for about three years. A stand that folds 90° and rotates 360° lets you mount it on a ceiling, wall or corner, and the meross app can split the detection area into three zones with custom sensitivity, for example a night light at the doorway and the main light deeper in the room. It connects over Matter over Thread to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant. The average rating is only 3.1 stars across 88 reviews, and many complaints trace back to setup and early firmware, so update it in the meross app before relying on it.

✅ Pros: IP67 sealed; long CR123A life; three app zones; flexible stand.
❌ Cons: Mixed reviews; zones and tuning only in the meross app.
🎯 Verdict: The presence sensor to put in a bathroom, basement, garage or covered entry.

6. LAFAER LWR01 Wireless Human Presence Sensor

Matter over Thread · mmWave · 3.5 m still / 6 m moving · battery or USB-C · IPX3
Buy Here →
LAFAER LWR01 Matter over Thread mmWave human presence sensor

The LWR01 is LAFAER’s mmWave-only sensor, and its party trick is power flexibility. It runs on batteries for more than a year, or you can plug in a USB-C cable for continuous high-performance sensing, which is ideal for a home office or TV room where you want instant response all day. LAFAER rates it to hold presence of a still person up to 3.5 m and pick up movement up to 6 m. It also has an ambient light sensor to skip daytime triggers and an IPX3 splash rating. It connects natively over Matter over Thread, and the listing spells out exactly which Apple, Amazon, Google, Homey and SmartThings hubs act as its Thread Border Router. With about 140 ratings at 3.3 stars, expect some tuning; the newer LWR02 above is the better buy unless you specifically want the USB-C option.

✅ Pros: Battery or USB-C power; holds still presence; light sensor; IPX3.
❌ Cons: No PIR for fast entry; shorter still-presence range; mixed reviews.
🎯 Verdict: A good mmWave choice when you want the option to wire it to USB later.

7. ANGELSHEEL Matter Motion Sensor

Matter over Thread · PIR 8 m / 90° · CR123A rated 2+ years · magnetic + adhesive mount
Buy Here →
ANGELSHEEL Matter over Thread PIR motion sensor with 8 m range

A narrow lens is a feature in a corridor: it triggers when someone walks down the hall instead of every time a door swings nearby. The ANGELSHEEL sensor has exactly that profile, a PIR with an 8 m reach and a 90° detection angle, which suits hallways, entrances and stair landings. It runs on a single CR123A rated for more than two years, mounts with 3M adhesive or a magnetic base, and the maker recommends about 2.2 m mounting height. The listing is refreshingly clear that it needs both a Matter controller and a Thread Border Router, and that Home Assistant works through its Matter integration. It is a new listing with only a handful of ratings (7 so far, averaging 4.5 stars), so treat it as a promising budget option rather than a proven one.

✅ Pros: Focused 90° lens; 8 m reach; long CR123A life; easy magnetic mount.
❌ Cons: Very few reviews; no light sensor listed; PIR only.
🎯 Verdict: A focused, affordable Thread PIR for corridors and doorways.

8. Eve Motion (Matter) 3-Pack

Matter over Thread · three PIR + light sensors · IPX3 · no account, no cloud
Buy Here →
Eve Motion Matter over Thread motion sensor 3-pack

Motion sensors are rarely a one-room purchase. Once the hallway light works, you want the same behavior in the bathroom and on the stairs. This three-pack of Eve Motion (Matter) sensors covers three spaces in one order, with the same PIR plus light sensor, IPX3 splash rating and local-only Matter over Thread connection as pick #3. Because every unit is a Thread device, adding several also strengthens the case for a solid Thread Border Router setup, ideally two border routers in different parts of the home. The bundle listing has about 85 ratings at 3.5 stars, and the single Eve Motion has a larger review history, so read both before you decide.

✅ Pros: Three sensors in one box; privacy-first; IPX3; sold directly with a buy box.
❌ Cons: Big upfront spend; PIR only; you need to keep six AA cells stocked.
🎯 Verdict: The easiest way to roll Matter motion sensing out across a whole floor.

11. THIRDREALITY Smart Night Light-T

Matter over Thread · RGB night light + motion + illuminance sensor · plugs into an outlet
Buy Here →
THIRDREALITY Smart Night Light-T Matter over Thread with motion and illuminance sensor

The Night Light-T is a 3-in-1 plug: an RGB color night light, a motion sensor and an illuminance sensor, certified for Matter over Thread. Plug it into a hallway, stairwell, nursery or bathroom outlet and you get a low-glow path light that responds to movement, while its motion and light readings are available to the rest of your Matter automations. Because it is mains powered there are no batteries to manage. THIRDREALITY even suggests using its color as a visual status indicator, for example glowing red when a Matter garage door is left open. It has about 48 ratings at 3.8 stars. Mounting height is fixed by your outlet, so it detects best in narrow spaces rather than large rooms.

✅ Pros: Light, motion and lux in one plug; no batteries; Matter over Thread certified.
❌ Cons: Low outlet height limits coverage; occupies an outlet.
🎯 Verdict: The simplest way to add Thread motion sensing and a path light to a hallway.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a motion sensor and an occupancy sensor in Matter?

Matter models both as an occupancy sensor that reports “occupied” or “unoccupied”, which is why Apple Home and Google Home may show a motion sensor as occupancy. The real difference is the detection method. A PIR sensor reports occupied only while it sees movement and then times out, while an mmWave or hybrid presence sensor keeps reporting occupied as long as someone is in the room, even if they are still.

Do I need a hub for a Matter over Thread motion sensor?

You don’t need a brand hub, but you do need a Thread Border Router that is also a Matter controller. Common ones are the Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet), HomePod mini and HomePod 2nd gen, Nest Hub 2nd gen and Nest Hub Max, Echo 4th gen and Echo Hub, SmartThings Station or Hub v3, the Aqara M3 and Home Assistant with a Thread radio. Wi-Fi sensors such as the meross MS600 and THIRDREALITY TL2 only need a Matter controller and your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

Will pets trigger an mmWave presence sensor?

Usually, yes. Consumer mmWave sensors such as the Aqara FP300 cannot reliably tell a large dog from a person, and ceiling fans, swaying curtains and even robot vacuums can also register. Lower the sensitivity in the brand app, aim the sensor away from fans and windows, mount it higher, and use zones on sensors that support them, such as the meross MS605. A PIR sensor mounted high and angled down is often more pet-tolerant.

How long do batteries last in Thread motion sensors?

Makers quote one to three years, and PIR sensors usually reach the top of that range because PIR draws almost nothing while idle. mmWave radar uses far more energy, so battery presence sensors trade some responsiveness for life. Real-world life drops when a sensor sits in a busy room, when it is shared with several Matter ecosystems at once, or when it is far from its Thread parent router. Plug-in sensors avoid the issue entirely.

Can I adjust sensitivity and timeout from Apple Home or Google Home?

Mostly not today. Matter controllers expose the occupied state and, where available, the light, temperature and humidity readings, but sensitivity, zones and hold time are usually set in the manufacturer’s app. Aqara’s sensors need an Aqara Thread hub for those settings, while meross and LAFAER use their own apps over the same Matter connection. Home Assistant can sometimes reach more options through its Matter integration, and newer Matter versions are gradually adding standard settings.
