MPXV5004DP Pressure Sensor

MPXV5004DP is a Pressure Sensor belonging to the MPxx5004 series introduced by Freescale Semiconductors. It is a monolithic silicon pressure sensor specially designed for microcontroller units with integrated analog to digital converters. A sensitive, piezoresistive pressure sensor combines a strain gauge to convert pressure to electric resistance. The sensor comes with internal temperature compensation and auto-calibration circuitry. The chip also uses fluorosilicone gel to isolate and transmit signals to the silicon diaphragm.

MPXV5004DP Differential and Gauge, Integrated Pressure Sensor

MPXV5004DP avails modern micromachining techniques, thin-film metallization, and bipolar processing to provide accurate results. It works by producing an output voltage signal proportional to the pressure applied to the sensor in the range of 0 to 3.92 kPa. MPXV5004DP has vast applications ranging from domestic to industrial level for water level sensing and pressure measurement.

Interfacing MPXV5004DP Pressure Sensor with MCU

To interface a pressure sensor to a microcontroller unit, the microcontroller should have an integrated analog to digital Converter. Otherwise, we must use an external ADC to make them compatible. Supply power to the sensor as well the MCU through supply pins. Connect an analog pin of the microcontroller unit to the Output Voltage pin of the sensor. Besides, one must use decoupling capacitors to minimize voltage spikes in input/output signals. An interfacing diagram for the visual understanding is shown below:

Working of MPXV5004DP with MCU

After interfacing the MPXV5004DP Pressure Sensor with the MCU let say Arduino as shown in the previous section, power up the Arduino so that it can energize the sensor as well. The sensor will measure the analog air pressure or water pressure at that time and generate a proportional output voltage signal. If you don’t know how to read analog signals with Arduino, you can read this post:

The output voltage signal is carried through the input analog pin of the Arduino to the Arduino IC, gets digitized with the help of ADCs, and shows the results on the Serial monitor.
