GSM-Based Projects for Engineering Students
- Intelligent energy meter billing using GSM and PIC microcontroller: The main objective of this project is to provide electricity billing information to users through SMS on their mobile phones. Voltage sensors, current sensors, and power factor measurement circuits are used in this project. The microcontroller reads the voltage, current, and power factor values from the energy meter and calculates the user’s bill using mathematical calculations. After calculating the bill, the microcontroller sends the billing information to the user’s mobile number using the GSM module.
- Remote monitoring of a transformer using a GSM module: In this project, one can measure transformer parameters from remote locations. Parameters such as voltage, current, frequency, temperature, and other transformer parameters can be measured and sent to the control room using a GSM module. GPRS data or the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) can be utilized to send data to any location in the world.
- GSM-based prepaid energy billing system: The main objective of this project is to introduce the concept of prepaid energy billing in the power sector for its benefits. While this idea may not be easily implementable, it is advantageous for power sector companies to recover their money from users in advance. In this project, the power company records the units consumed by the user according to the already paid bill. When the consumer reaches the maximum allowed units, a message is sent to the user’s mobile for billing.
- GSM-based wireless electronics Notice board: Notice boards are widely used in schools, colleges, universities, and companies to provide information to others about any new notices. Keeping notices updated on a physical notice board can be challenging. The basic idea behind this project is to create a programmable notice board. This digital electronics notice board is controlled by simple SMS commands. One can use their mobile phone to update the notice board regularly. The GSM module receives SMS messages and displays them on the notice board with the help of a microcontroller.
- GSM-based railway track security system: This project can be used to detect cracks in railway tracks. The track detector detects cracks in the railway track and informs the concerned personnel at the railway station using wireless communication through the GSM module.
- Vehicle security system using GSM and GPS module: This project locates the exact position of a vehicle using a GPS module and informs the owner of the vehicle through SMS using the GSM module. This project is very useful and is already implemented in vehicle tracking systems. One can easily create their own vehicle tracking system using a GSM and GPS module.
- GSM-based remote monitoring system: The main objective of this project is to measure the parameters of remotely located devices and send the data to a control room using a GSM module. The devices can be anything for which you want to measure parameters, such as transformers, motors, generators, transmission lines, or temperature.
- GSM-based greenhouse monitoring system: This project measures light intensity, temperature, moisture level, and humidity level in a greenhouse system and sends the data to the user through a GSM module. The user can take necessary actions by sending SMS commands to the GSM module. For example, the user can turn on the lights if the light intensity falls below a certain level or activate the water pump if the moisture level is low.
- Home automation system using a GSM module: This project allows users to control home devices using their cell phones. Users can control their home devices by sending SMS commands for turning devices on or off. The GSM module receives these messages and communicates them to the microcontroller, which controls the respective devices by sending signals to the respective relays.
